How to Toggle Item Locks and Use Temporary Bypass in ItemLocks

guide

ItemLocks lets you protect items from being moved, dropped, or swapped, and it gives you two hold-based controls for changing that protection on the fly. One control flips an item's lock state, and the other suspends your locks for as long as you hold it. Both are operated through key bindings rather than through crafting or any in-game item.

The Two Hold Controls

The mod exposes two actions in its controls:

  • Toggle Lock (Hold) — while held, this changes whether the item you are pointing at or holding is locked or unlocked.
  • Bypass Locks (Hold) — while held, your locks stop applying, so you can move or drop protected items for that moment.

Neither action has a fixed key assigned by the mod. Open the controls menu and assign the corresponding hotkey to each one. Until you do, there is nothing to press.

Toggling a Lock

Use the hotkey you bound to Toggle Lock (Hold). Hold it down to switch the lock state of the item in question. Because the action is a hold control, the change happens while the key is down rather than as a single tap. Once an item is locked, it stays locked until you use the same control again on it.

Temporarily Bypassing Locks

Bind a key to Bypass Locks (Hold) and hold it whenever you need to act on a locked item. While it is held, the lock no longer blocks you, which is useful for one-off moves without permanently unlocking anything. Release the key and the lock applies again.

Automatic Bypass Options

If holding a key every time becomes tedious, the mod offers three settings that bypass locks automatically in specific situations. Each can be turned on or off independently.

  • Auto-Bypass held items — when enabled, an item you are holding inside an inventory is always treated as bypassed.
  • Auto-Bypass offhand swapping — when enabled, moving items to or from your offhand always skips the lock check.
  • Auto-Bypass all items — when enabled, bypass is permanently in effect, with one exception: dropping items with the drop key still respects locks.

Version Notifications

ItemLocks can report version-related feedback. These settings control whether that feedback appears and where.

  • Enable notifications — the master switch for version feedback. When it is on, the mod may respond to version changes.
  • Enable chat notification — when on, version feedback is delivered to chat as you enter a world or a server.
  • Enable hud indicator — when on, version feedback is displayed in the game interface instead.

Hotbar Display

One setting governs whether locks are visible on your hotbar. When it is disabled, locked items no longer show a lock marker there. This affects display only; it does not change which items are locked.

Key Binding Errors

The mod includes a comment entry described as key binding error messages. If a binding problem is detected, ItemLocks resets the affected key to its default and reports it. The messages you may see are:

  • A notice that the lock toggle key was reset to default to prevent a crash.
  • A notice that the lock bypass key was reset to default to prevent a crash.
  • A notice that the show options key was reset to default to prevent a crash.

If you see one of these, the relevant binding has been returned to its default value. Reassign it in the controls menu if you prefer a different key.

Quick Reference

  • Lock or unlock an item: hold the Toggle Lock (Hold) hotkey.
  • Ignore locks briefly: hold the Bypass Locks (Hold) hotkey.
  • Skip the key entirely for held items, offhand swaps, or everything: enable the matching Auto-Bypass setting.
  • Control version feedback: use Enable notifications, Enable chat notification, and Enable hud indicator.
  • Hide lock markers on the hotbar: disable the hotbar lock display setting.
