Getting Started with Jade: The Look-At Overlay

Jade draws a compact overlay near the top of your screen that identifies whatever block or entity you are looking at. As soon as your crosshair lands on a target, the overlay names it and adds a line or two of context, so you can read the world without opening menus.

Turning the overlay on and off

The overlay is controlled by two actions rather than a fixed key. The first toggles the whole display on and off: press the bound Show Overlay button once to hide it and again to bring it back, which is useful when you want a completely clean screen for a screenshot. The second is a hold action: keep the Show Details button pressed to expand the overlay with extra information that is normally tucked away. Both are assigned in the controls menu, so you decide which buttons feel natural.

What the overlay tells you

For a block, Jade reports its name and, when enabled, details such as its coordinates and its distance from you. For a creature it can show identifying information along with combat-relevant numbers like remaining health and armor. Some readouts are provided by other mods through Jade's add-on system, so a heavily modded world will usually show richer overlays than a vanilla one.

Positioning the overlay

You are not stuck with the default spot. Enter Jade's positioning mode and you can drag the overlay wherever you like, then press escape to leave that mode once it sits where you want. A separate option flips the overlay to the opposite side to match your main hand, which keeps it clear of other on-screen elements. Between dragging and flipping, the panel can sit comfortably on any layout.

A few first choices

Two settings are worth setting early. One hides the overlay while the debug screen is open so the two do not overlap, and a matching one hides it while the player list is shown. If a line of information is ever wrong for your world, left-clicking clears the current content so Jade can gather it again. From here you can move on to fine-tuning the overlay's appearance and the specific lines it shows.
