Managing JEI Bookmarks and Lookup History

guide

Bookmarking Ingredients and Recipes

The bookmark system in JEI lets you save ingredients or recipes for quick access. To bookmark an ingredient, hover your cursor over it in the ingredient list and press the designated bookmark key (assign it in the Controls menu). Once bookmarked, the item appears in the bookmark list on the left side of the screen.

When you bookmark a recipe’s output item, JEI can either save that item itself or save the entire recipe, depending on the Bookmark Output as Recipe setting. If enabled, pressing the bookmark key on a recipe output stores the recipe instead of just the ingredient.

New bookmarks are placed either at the front or the end of the bookmark list, controlled by the Add Bookmarks to Front option. When enabled, fresh bookmarks appear at the beginning; when disabled, they are appended to the end.

To remove a bookmark, click on it in the bookmark list. You can also delete it by using the same key that added it, since the action is labeled Add/Remove Bookmark.

Rearranging Bookmarks

If the drag to rearrange option is active, you can reorder bookmarks by dragging them within the list. The Drag Delay setting determines how many milliseconds you must hold a mouse click before the action is treated as a drag rather than a click. This prevents accidental moves when you only intend to select or delete.

The bookmark list has its own alignment and background settings. You can set the Horizontal Alignment and Vertical Alignment to position the list within its available area. The Navigation Visibility option controls whether page buttons or scroll bars appear, with choices like AUTO_HIDE (show only when the list overflows), PAGED, SCROLLING, or SMOOTH_SCROLLING. If you choose a scrolling style, the Smooth Scroll Rate adjusts the pixel speed of mouse wheel scrolling.

Using Lookup History

JEI records a history of the ingredients you have recently used for recipe lookups. The Lookup History overlay displays this list, and you can show or hide it with the corresponding toggle. Several settings govern its behavior:

  • The maximum number of rows shown in the overlay.
  • The total number of lookup history ingredients saved.
  • Which side of the screen the overlay appears on.

To use the history, simply click an ingredient from the list to perform a lookup again.

Bookmark Tooltips

When you hover over a bookmark, extra tooltip features can appear if enabled. The Bookmarks Tooltips Features option turns these on, and you need to hold the key assigned to Keybind for Bookmarks Tooltips to see them. While holding that key, you can click an ingredient in the tooltip to view its recipes. The tooltip may also show a summary of ingredients needed for a recipe, if the Recipe Ingredient Summary option is active.

Several hotkeys affect how you interact with bookmarks and lookups:

  • Show/Hide Bookmarked Ingredients toggles the entire bookmark overlay.
  • Craft Bookmarked Recipe (One) and Craft Bookmarked Recipe (Many) let you craft from a bookmarked recipe.
  • Copy Recipe ID to Clipboard copies the identifier of the recipe you are viewing.
  • Clear Search Filter resets the search bar.

The bookmark list and the main ingredient list each have their own layout settings, including background drawing and navigation alignment modes. The RECTANGULAR mode keeps page navigation aligned to the grid, while MAXIMIZE_AVAILABLE_SPACE can resize or shift navigation around excluded areas.

If the bookmark overlay cannot fit on screen, JEI will display a message indicating that the area is too small. Similarly, the ingredient list on the right will warn you if there is insufficient space.
