Getting Started with JourneyMap: Opening Maps and Basic Controls
First Launch and the Chat Message
When JourneyMap first becomes active in your game, it announces its readiness through a chat message. This confirmation lets you know the mod has loaded successfully and is ready to use.
Opening the Fullscreen Map and Minimap
JourneyMap provides two primary map views: a fullscreen map and a smaller minimap that stays visible during gameplay.
- Fullscreen Map: Use the action named Show / Hide Fullscreen Map to open and close the large map view. The corresponding hotkey can be set in the controls menu.
- Minimap: Use the action named Show / Hide MiniMap to toggle the small map on your screen. Its hotkey is also assigned in the controls menu.
The fullscreen map is the main tool for exploring your world in detail. From here you can pan around, zoom, and interact with waypoints.
Basic Fullscreen Map Controls
Once the fullscreen map is open, several actions are available:
- Panning: You can drag with the mouse to move the map view. Alternatively, use the actions Pan North (16 Blocks), Pan South (16 Blocks), Pan East (16 Blocks), and Pan West (16 Blocks) to move in fixed increments.
- Following: The Auto-center the map on you button keeps the map centered on your character. Manual panning will turn this off until you re-enable it.
- Creating Waypoints: Double-click on the map to create a waypoint at the cursor's location. You can also use the action Create Waypoint (at cursor) from a menu. A single click on an existing waypoint will let you view it, and holding Shift allows you to edit it.
- Context Menu: Right-clicking on the map may open a context menu with options like Create Waypoint (at cursor) and Chat Position (at cursor).
Understanding Map Modes
The fullscreen map can display your world in different ways. Use the buttons to switch between them:
- Day: Shows the world as it appears in daylight.
- Night: Shows the world under moonlight.
- Cave/Interior: Shows a cave or interior map when you are not under the sky.
- Topography: Shows a contour map that indicates elevation changes.
- Biome: Provides a map of the different biomes in the area.
You can also choose which entities appear on the map using menu items like Show nearby animals, Show nearby players (multiplayer), and Show nearby villagers.
The Minimap
The minimap is a smaller, always-available map that helps you navigate while playing. Its appearance and behavior can be customized in the options.
- Position: You can move the minimap to a corner of the screen (Top Left, Top Right, Bottom Left, Bottom Right), the Top Center, or the Center. A Custom Location option lets you set its position with percentage-based X and Y values.
- Shape: The minimap can be a Circle, Square, Horizontal Rectangle, or Vertical Rectangle.
- Rotation: The map can be static with North always at the top, or it can rotate so your player icon always points up. The "My Heading" option is only supported with the Circle shape.
- Size and Opacity: Adjust the minimap's size as a percentage of your window size. You can also control the opacity of the map, its frame, and its background.
- Presets: JourneyMap includes two minimap presets. Use the action Switch MiniMap Preset to toggle between them. The key for this is the backslash (`\`) key.
Waypoint Basics
Waypoints are markers you place on the map to remember locations.
- Creating: Double-click on the fullscreen map to create a waypoint at that spot. You can also use the Create Waypoint (at cursor) action.
- Editing: Hold Shift and click on a waypoint to edit its properties.
- Viewing: Click on a waypoint to view its details.
- Teleporting: Depending on server settings, you may be able to teleport to a waypoint. The game may only allow teleporting via waypoints, disabling arbitrary right-click teleportation on the map.
Deleting Map Data
If you need to start fresh, you can permanently wipe your explored map data. The action Delete map in one or more dimensions will present a confirmation dialog. Be aware that this action cannot be undone. You can choose to delete data for all dimensions or only the current one.
