The Millstone: Animal-Powered Ore Doubling and Dyes

guide

The Millstone in Kaleidoscope Cookery is an ore multiplier that needs no fuel and no redstone - you harness an animal to it and it turns. That makes it one of the cheapest ore-processing setups in any modpack it appears in, and its 85 recipes reach a lot further than the cooking mod it ships with.

Building one

The recipe is a wooden fence on the top centre, a Stick and a Grindstone in the middle row, and three Smooth Stone across the bottom. Every part is early-game, so the millstone is available long before a furnace array would be.

Using the Millstone

Three steps, and the animal is the engine:

  • Load it. Right-click with items in hand to insert them. Items dropped onto the millstone from above are pulled in automatically, which is what makes hopper and dropper feeds work.
  • Harness an animal. Certain creatures placed by the millstone can be hitched to it. A donkey is the classic choice and the mod gives you an advancement for using one.
  • Wait one rotation. Once the animal is walking, the stone turns. After one full rotation the loaded items are transformed and ejected out of the opening.

The sound cue is a low churn, so you can hear from across a base whether the mill is still running or your animal has wandered off.

Ore multiplication

This is the reason to build one even in a pack full of industrial machines. Raw ore blocks go in whole and come out multiplied, with no fuel cost at all:

  • Iron Ore or Deepslate Iron Ore into 3 Raw Iron
  • Copper Ore or Deepslate Copper Ore into 5 Raw Copper
  • Gold Ore or Deepslate Gold Ore into 3 Raw Gold
  • Coal Ore or Deepslate Coal Ore into 3 Coal
  • Redstone Ore or Deepslate Redstone Ore into 7 Redstone Dust
  • Lapis Lazuli Ore or Deepslate Lapis Lazuli Ore into 7 Lapis Lazuli
  • Diamond Ore or Deepslate Diamond Ore into 2 Diamond
  • Emerald Ore or Deepslate Emerald Ore into 2 Emerald
  • Nether Gold Ore into 5 Gold Nugget, and Gilded Blackstone into 3 Gold Nugget
  • Block of Amethyst into 3 Amethyst Shard

Silk Touch is the prerequisite for all of these, because you need the ore block itself rather than its normal drop. Pair a Silk Touch pickaxe with a millstone and your effective yield beats Fortune on most of the list.

Dyes, three at a time

Flowers grind into dye at rates a crafting table cannot match. Single-block flowers give two dye each and tall ones give three:

  • Two dye each from Poppy, Red Tulip, Beetroot (red), Dandelion (yellow), Cornflower (blue), Blue Orchid (light blue), Allium (magenta), Orange Tulip and Torchflower (orange), Azure Bluet and Oxeye Daisy (light gray), Lily of the Valley and White Tulip (white), Pitcher Plant (cyan), Wither Rose (black), Cactus and Fern (green), Pink Tulip and Pink Petals (pink)
  • Three dye each from Rose Bush (red), Sunflower (yellow), Lilac (magenta), Peony (pink), Large Fern (green)

Wool is on the same list from the other direction: any of the sixteen wool colours grinds back into 3 String, which turns a sheep farm into a string farm.

Food and farm processing

  • Wheat into Flour, the base of the mod's dough recipes
  • Any seeds into Oil, the fat every wok recipe needs
  • Rice Panicle into 3 Rice Seed
  • Bone into 5 Bone Meal, well above the vanilla three

Oil is worth calling out. The alternative source is killing pigs, piglins or hoglins with a kitchen knife, which is slow and finite. A seed farm feeding a millstone is renewable and unattended.

Stone and terrain shaping

The millstone also does the jobs a stonecutter cannot:

  • Stone into Cobblestone, and Cobblestone into Smooth Stone - a fuel-free path around the furnace step
  • Andesite, Diorite, Granite, Basalt, Smooth Basalt, Blackstone, Deepslate and Cobbled Deepslate into their polished forms
  • Gravel into Sand, and sand into the matching smooth sandstone
  • Flint into Gunpowder

That last one deserves emphasis: a gravel supply becomes a gunpowder supply with no mob farm involved.

Automating it

Because items dropped from above are inserted automatically, a hopper or dropper above the millstone handles input without any special machinery. The animal is the part that cannot be automated - it has to be a live creature, hitched and moving - so the practical setup is a fenced pen with the millstone at its centre and a feed line running in from a farm.
