Bladed Weapons & Fencing: Swords, Katanas & Rapiers

guide

Bladed weapons encompass an extensive armory of specialized cutting, thrusting, and parrying swords spanning both European martial traditions and Eastern curved blades. Understanding the balance, reach, and material requirements of each sword style allows duelists to select the perfect weapon for single combat or open skirmishes.

Fencing Blades and Agile Thrusting Arms

Fencing arms emphasize rapid thrusting recovery, extended linear reach, and defensive counterplay:

  • Rapier: Forged using one material ingot, one material nugget, and a Handle. The rapier features rapid thrusting cadence and extended reach, piercing through unarmored targets while keeping distance.
  • Parrying Dagger: Forged with one ingot, one nugget, and a Handle. Held in the off-hand, it offers swift parrying utility and rapid close-range counters.
  • Dagger: A lightweight thrusting knife forged with an ingot, a nugget, and a Handle, offering near-instant attack cooldowns.
  • Rondel Dagger: A stiff-bladed anti-armor dagger forged using a Stick instead of a leather handle, designed to exploit openings in heavy plate armor.

European Cutting Swords and Greatswords

For warriors facing armored infantry or multiple foes, broad cutting blades deliver substantial kinetic force:

  • Arming Sword: The standard double-edged sidearm, forged from an ingot, a nugget, and a Handle. It provides reliable damage and classic sweeping mechanics.
  • Falchion: A heavy, curved single-edged blade forged with a Handle, weighted toward the point to deliver crushing cleaves.
  • Sabre: A curved cavalry sword forged with a Handle, optimized for sweeping slashes and momentum strikes on horseback.
  • Xiphos: A short double-edged sword forged with a wooden Stick, ideal for aggressive forward thrusts.
  • Longsword: A versatile two-handed weapon forged with a Handle, offering superior reach and sweeping cleaves in two-handed stances.
  • Kriegsmesser: A curved two-handed great blade forged with a wooden Stick, delivering vicious cuts across multiple opponents.
  • Zweihander: A massive two-handed greatsword forged from an ingot, a nugget, and a Handle. Its immense length and weight require deliberate timing, but strikes sweep through entire frontlines with unmatched impact.

Japanese Curved Blades

Eastern smithing traditions produce elegant curved blades tempered for precise slicing cuts:

  • Tanto: A compact tactical piercing dagger forged with an ingot, a nugget, and a Handle.
  • Wakizashi: A medium companion blade forged with a Handle, balancing agile close-quarters slashes with defensive agility.
  • Katana: The iconic curved two-handed sword forged with an ingot, a nugget, and a Handle. Its balanced blade excels at high-damage draw cuts and fluid striking sequences.
  • Nodachi: An oversized battlefield blade forged with a Handle. The exaggerated blade arc sweeps across wide groups of opponents, combining the reach of a polearm with the cutting power of a greatsword.

All bladed weapons can be forged across six material tiers: copper, iron, gold, diamond, steel, and netherite. Crafting your leather handles beforehand with two sticks and one leather ensures your forge is always ready for custom blade production.
