Crude Oil Refining with the Distillery and Distillation Tower in Modern Industrialization
Refining raw fossil fuels in Modern Industrialization requires separating crude petrochemicals inside the single-block Distillery or the colossal multiblock Distillation Tower. Unrefined crude oil cannot directly fuel advanced diesel engines or plastic synthesis until it undergoes thermal fractionation. By constructing dedicated distillation infrastructure, chemical plants can break raw oil into light fuel, heavy fuel, and naphtha to power mid-game turbines and chemical synthesis chains.
Crafting the Single-Block Distillery
For early electrical chemical processing before establishing multi-block plants, engineers can fabricate the standalone Distillery:
- In an Assembler operating at 8 EU/t for 200 ticks, combine one Fluid Pipe, two
Large Pump units, one
Basic Machine Hull, two glass blocks, two
Electronic Circuit components, and one Electrum Cable. - Alternatively, construct the block on a standard crafting table: place one fluid pipe flanked by two glass blocks in the top row, one basic machine hull flanked by two large pumps in the middle row, and one electrum cable flanked by two electronic circuits in the bottom row.
- Supply low-voltage electrical power to the rear terminals and connect fluid pipes to supply crude liquids.
- The standalone distillery processes fluid batches one recipe at a time, making it ideal for small-scale shale oil recovery or targeted fuel separation.
Constructing the Multiblock Distillation Tower
Large-scale petrochemical facilities transition to the towering multiblock Distillation Tower to fractionate bulk crude oil simultaneously into multiple byproduct tiers:
- Assemble the Distillation Tower controller in an assembler or crafting table. The recipe requires four
Advanced Pump units, one
Turbo Machine Hull, two
Digital Circuit components, and two standalone Distillery blocks. - Construct the vertical multiblock tower using
Clean Stainless Steel Machine Casing blocks and
Stainless Steel Pipe Machine Casing components according to structure validation guides. - Mount an HV Energy Input Hatch or MV Energy Input Hatch to deliver the electrical power required for fractional distillation.
- Install a fluid input hatch near the tower base to receive pumped crude oil from oil drills.
- Install three fluid output hatches stacked vertically along the three upper tiers of the column to catch the separate boiling fractions simultaneously.
Fractionating Crude Oil into Chemical Streams
Running crude oil through the distillation tower splits the complex hydrocarbon liquid into three essential industrial fluid fractions:
- Sulfuric Naphtha: A critical chemical intermediate used in cracking units and polymer plants to synthesize synthetic rubber and plastics.
- Sulfuric Light Fuel: Refined into high-octane diesel fuel for combustion engines, vehicles, and high-output generators.
- Sulfuric Heavy Fuel: A viscous residual hydrocarbon that can be cracked into lighter fractions or burned in heavy industrial burners.
Pairing the distillation tower with automated chemical desulfurization lines removes corrosive sulfur byproducts, converting raw oil into a continuous supply of clean liquid fuel and chemical building blocks.
