Building and Powering the Steam Blast Furnace Multiblock

guide

The Steam Blast Furnace is Modern Industrialization's foundational steam-tier multiblock machine used to produce steel and smelt high-melting-point ores before electrical power is unlocked.

Crafting the Steam Blast Furnace Controller

Before constructing the multiblock structure, craft the central controller block at a crafting table:

Both methods produce 1 Steam Blast Furnace controller block.

Fire Clay Bricks are crafted by mixing clay dust and brick dust into fire clay, then firing the resulting bricks inside a furnace.

Multiblock Structure Assembly

The Steam Blast Furnace requires a 3x3x4 hollow multiblock structure constructed primarily from Fire Clay Bricks:

  • Layer 1 (Base): Place an unbroken 3x3 platform of Fire Clay Bricks.
  • Layer 2: Place the Steam Blast Furnace controller in the center front face. Surround the remaining perimeter with Fire Clay Bricks, leaving the center block hollow.
  • Layer 3: Build another 3x3 perimeter of Fire Clay Bricks with a hollow center.
  • Layer 4 (Roof): Place an unbroken 3x3 ceiling of Fire Clay Bricks.

To operate, replace designated brick blocks with utility hatches:

  • 1 Steam Input Hatch: To receive steam generated by boilers.
  • 1 Item Input Hatch: To insert iron, coke, or raw ores.
  • 1 Item Output Hatch: To extract finished steel ingots.

When assembled correctly, right-clicking the controller displays the machine interface showing internal steam levels and processing progress.

Smelting Steel and Early Alloys

The primary purpose of the Steam Blast Furnace is forging steel:

  • Insert 1 Iron Ingot and 1 Coke (or Coke Dust) into the input hatch.
  • Supply continuous steam from a steam boiler.
  • The machine cooks the mixture into 1 Steel Ingot, unlocking the steel age of machinery.

It also processes raw bauxite and antimony ores into basic refined components, paving the path toward electrical components. Maintaining steady steam pressure is vital, as any steam deficit pauses the smelting timer. Connect multiple bronze boilers to prevent steam starvation during long smelting batches.
