No Chat Reports: Basic Controls, Signing Modes, and Interface Guide

guide

No Chat Reports is a client-side mod that strips cryptographic signatures from your chat messages, preventing them from being tied to your Microsoft account or used with the Player Chat Reporting feature. This guide covers the mod's basic controls, its signing modes, and how to operate its main interface.

The Main Interface

The mod's primary control is a safety status button that appears in the chat screen. Clicking it lets you interact with signing modes directly. Left-click this button to cycle between the available signing modes. The button also displays your current server's safety status, which is shown in the bottom-right corner of the chat screen and can be hovered for more detail.

An encryption button can also appear in the chat screen. Right-click it to open the encryption settings. If you prefer, you can configure the mod so this button is hidden entirely — note that hiding the button does not disable encryption itself.

Signing Modes

Signing modes determine whether your messages carry signatures. The available modes behave as follows:

  • Vanilla-like mode automatically enables signing the moment you join a server, matching how an unmodified client behaves.
  • Never-sign mode ignores all server requests to sign your messages.
  • Unsignable mode applies when your messages cannot be signed at all — for example, with an offline account or when signing keys cannot be fetched.
  • Prompt mode leaves messages unsigned by default, but shows a pop-up screen letting you enable signing for a single session if the server demands it.
  • Auto-accept mode works like prompt mode, except signing is enabled automatically when the server demands it, with no pop-up.

You can set a default signing mode for servers that force or allow signing. If a server refuses to deliver an unsigned message, you can change your signing mode or respond through a prompt screen.

Server Safety Levels

When you evaluate a server, the mod reports one of several safety levels:

  • Secure means the server has No Chat Reports or otherwise prevents your messages from being reportable, so you can chat safely.
  • No reporting means chat reports are disabled on that server.
  • Unintrusive means the server allows unsigned messages that cannot be reported, though vanilla clients may still send signed messages and treat unsigned ones as unverified.
  • Insecure means the server demands signed messages, which can serve as evidence in a report.
  • Client means the server lacks No Chat Reports while you have configured the mod to require itself on servers.
  • Unknown means safety hasn't been determined yet — send a message to evaluate it.
  • Undefined means evaluation failed, which should not happen.

Realms servers get a special warning: they are not private, owners cannot disable reporting, and Mojang runs automated chat monitoring. Encryption is strongly advised there. Singleplayer and self-hosted LAN worlds are always safe for chatting.

Encryption

Encryption lets you protect messages with a secret key so only people who know it can read them. The settings screen includes a key field, an optional passphrase field for deriving a key, and key validation that reports whether your key passed or failed. A dice button generates a new random key for the selected algorithm.

Several algorithms are available, including AES variants and a Caesar cipher. Some produce longer messages that servers might truncate. While encryption is active, you can hold the corresponding hotkey (set it in the controls menu) to send a single message without encrypting it. Keep in mind that moderators may mute or ban you for messages that appear as garbled text, so share keys only through secure channels.

Additional Options

The mod offers toggles for showing or hiding encryption indicators, unverified message indicators, modified message indicators, system message indicators, warning toasts, and signing request messages. You can also enable a verified icon in the multiplayer menu for safe servers, show a config reload button, hide the report button entirely, and require No Chat Reports on servers you join.
