Understanding Server Safety Levels and the Safe Server Icon in No Chat Reports
No Chat Reports labels every server you join with a safety status so you can tell at a glance whether your messages can be reported to Mojang. The status appears in the bottom-right corner of the chat screen when the Show server safety option is active, and the icon is hoverable for more detail. You can also cycle between signing modes by left-clicking the safety status button in the chat screen.
Reading the Safety Levels
- secure — The server has No Chat Reports or blocks chat reports in another known way. You can chat safely.
- unintrusive — The server accepts unsigned messages that cannot be reported. Be aware that unless a plugin blocks reports, vanilla clients still send signed messages, see unsigned ones as "Unverified", and hide them entirely if "Only Show Secure Chat" is on.
- insecure — The server demands that every chat message be signed. Signed messages are potentially incriminating evidence usable against you in a report.
- unknown — The mod has not yet determined the server's safety. Send a chat message to evaluate it.
- undefined — The server's safety could not be evaluated at all. This should never occur and is worth reporting as a bug.
- Realms — Realms servers are not private. Owners cannot turn off chat reporting, and Mojang runs automated chat monitoring that escalates potential "online harms" to human review regardless of the owner's wishes. A violation of the Community Standards can get you banned from all multiplayer services, even if nobody in the chat was offended. Encryption is strongly advised here.
Singleplayer and self-hosted LAN worlds are always safe for chatting.
The Safe Server Icon
The Verified icon enabled setting lets the mod show a special icon in the multiplayer menu for servers with No Chat Reports or similar anti-reporting measures. Its position is adjusted with the Verified icon X-offset and Verified icon Y-offset settings. The server must send extra data during pings for this icon and related technical purposes to work.
Signing Modes and Their Indicators
Your signing mode determines whether your messages carry signatures:
- allowed — Signing is on for this session.
- allowed session — Signing is on now but turns off when you rejoin.
- Signing is off for this session.
- disabled allowance pending — Signing is off but turns on once you send any message.
- disabled offline — Signing is off because the server is offline.
- insecure signing — You enabled signing, making your messages potential evidence in a report.
- allowed realms — Signing is always on for Realms because it is always required there.
The Default signing mode setting controls what mode applies on servers that force or allow signing. One mode mirrors vanilla behaviour by enabling signing the moment you enter a server. Another never signs and ignores all signing requests. A third applies when your messages cannot be signed at all, such as with an offline account. Prompt mode leaves messages unsigned until the server demands signing, then shows a pop-up where you can allow it for one session. A similar mode enables signing automatically when demanded, without a pop-up.
If a server refuses an unsigned message, you can change your signing mode or use the prompt screen. A caution screen titled Chat Signing Requested explains that the server requires signed messages and offers an Allow Signing button, plus a Don't show again during this session checkbox.
Encryption
Encryption lets you protect messages with a secret key that only people who know it can decrypt, and the mod automatically decrypts incoming encrypted messages when a suitable key is set and the feature is on. Available algorithms include AES/CFB8+Base64R, AES/GCM+Base64R, AES/ECB+Base64R, and a Caesar cipher. Hold the corresponding hotkey (set it in the controls menu) while sending to skip encryption for one message. Note that moderators may mute or ban you for what looks like garbled text, so generate a custom key and share it only through secure channels.
