Animation Smoothing Strength, Leg Smoothing Toggle, and Other Naturalness Tweaks in Not Enough Animations
Not Enough Animations offers several settings that control how smooth and lifelike player movement looks, and this guide explains those options and how to reach them. All of these live inside the mod's settings interface, which is titled Not Enough Animations Settings. You open that interface through the mod's own menu, then adjust each entry directly.
Animation Smoothing
Animation Smoothing is the core option here. It softens the motion of arms and legs so they appear more natural and less jerky. A second control sets how much smoothing is applied — turn it up for gentler motion, down for sharper motion. If you want a subtler effect, lower the strength; if the default still looks twitchy to you, raise it.
Disable Leg Smoothing
Disable Leg Smoothing is a separate toggle that turns off smoothing for the legs only. Use it when you like the smoothed arms but prefer the legs to keep their original, unsmoothed motion. Because it is independent of the main smoothing strength, you can leave the overall smoothing active and still switch leg smoothing off on its own.
Rotation Locking
Animation Rotation Locking ties the body's rotation to the head's rotation, so the torso follows where the player looks. The setting also lets you choose which type of rotation locking to use. Two related toggles refine this: Limit Rotation Lock To FP restricts the effect to first person only, and Apply Rotation Lock To Everyone extends it to all players rather than just your own character. Two further values let you set a normal rotation lock angle and a blocking rotation lock angle; both of these only take effect in None mode.
Arm and Hand Tweaks
- Hold Up Items makes the player raise items as though inspecting or presenting them. Related controls include Hold Up Target, which changes where the held item points, Hold Up Camera Offset, which shifts the arm sideways in Camera mode, and Hold Up Only Self, which applies the effect to your player alone and not to others. A separate control modifies how much the item is held up.
- Item Swap Animation adds motion when moving an item between the main hand and the off hand.
- Bow Animation Fixes hides offhand items while a bow is being drawn. Clamp Crossbow Animations limits crossbow motion, and Custom Bow Rotation Lock angles the body while the custom bow animation plays.
- Tweak Elytra Flying refines the elytra flight animation.
- In-World Map Rendering draws the map in the world rather than only in first person. In-World Books renders books with their text in the world, though it is still a work in progress.
Movement and Interaction Animations
Several toggles add animations for specific actions: climbing ladders (ladders only, not vines or scaffolding), eating and drinking, rowing a boat, riding a horse, crawling (replacing the vanilla swimming-style crawl), falling, freezing, being on fire, and holding a lantern. Horse Riding Leg Animation poses the legs differently while mounted. Snap Body To Ladder turns the body toward a ladder during a climb, and the Ladder Arm Amplifier controls how much the arms move while climbing, along with settings for arm height and arm speed.
Two social animations exist as well. Petting works by looking at a wolf or cat while sneaking; hugging works by looking at another player while sneaking. A running animation in a certain recognizable style is included as an easter egg.
Bed and Deprecated Options
Two toggles prevent the player from holding items in bed and from moving their arms in bed. Finally, Scabbard Sword is marked deprecated and slated for removal — it only shows the last used sword visually, with no awareness of your real inventory, so a sword may still appear after you drop it or store it. The mod recommends other mods for that feature.
To operate any of these, open the settings interface and toggle or adjust the entry you want. For the hold-up and similar actions, use the corresponding hotkey, which you can assign in the controls menu.
