Not Enough Animations Settings and Animation Toggles Guide

guide

Not Enough Animations is a mod that changes how player movement and item use look, replacing or adding animations for many everyday actions. Everything it does is controlled through its own settings screen, where you turn individual animations on or off and adjust how strong they are. This guide covers what the mod offers, how to reach that settings screen, and which toggles are worth enabling first.

Opening the Settings Menu

The mod's configuration lives in a screen titled Not Enough Animations Settings. Open it through the mod's own interface, then work down the list of options. Each entry has a name and a short description explaining its effect. Some options are simple on/off switches, while others expand into sliders or sub-options that fine-tune the same animation.

A few entries sit under a legacy label, meaning they are unfinished or deprecated. Treat those as optional extras rather than core features.

Start With Smoothing

The single most noticeable change is Animation Smoothing. It softens the arm and leg movements so they look more natural and less jerky. Once enabled, a second control lets you set how much smoothing is applied. If the result feels too floaty, reduce the amount; if limbs still snap around, raise it.

If you like the smoothing overall but want the legs left alone, Disable Leg Smoothing turns off smoothing for the legs only.

Core Animation Toggles

These are the animations most players will want on from the start:

  • Eat/Drink Animation — adds a proper animation for eating and drinking.
  • Item Swap Animation — animates moving an item between your main hand and off hand.
  • Boat Rowing Animation — animates rowing a boat.
  • Horse Riding Animation — animates riding a horse. Pair it with Horse Riding Leg Animation, which puts the player's legs into a different pose while mounted.
  • Crawling Animation — replaces the vanilla crawling (swimming) animation with a dedicated one.
  • Ladder climbing animation — adds an animation for climbing ladders. Note that it only covers ladders, not vines or scaffolding. Its look is tuned with Ladder Arm Amplifier (how much the arms move), plus controls for arm height and arm speed while climbing.
  • Tweak Elytra Flying — adjusts the elytra flight animation so it reads as more natural.
  • Bow Animation Fixes — hides offhand items while a bow is being pulled.
  • Freezing Animation and the on-fire animation — add reactions for being frozen and being ablaze.
  • Falling Animation — marked as a work in progress, adds an animation for falling.

Rotation and Body Behaviour

Animation Rotation Locking ties the body's rotation to where the head is looking. You can pick the locking type, and Limit Rotation Lock To FP restricts the effect to first person only. Apply Rotation Lock To Everyone extends it to other players rather than just yourself. Two angle controls set your normal and blocking rotation angles, and these only take effect in None mode.

Related options include Snap Body To Ladder, which turns the body to face a ladder while climbing, and Custom Bow Rotation Lock, which angles the body while the custom bow animation plays.

Interaction and Extra Animations

Several animations trigger through ordinary actions rather than a menu:

  • Petting animation — look at a wolf or cat while sneaking to pet it.
  • Simple Hugging Animation — look at another player while sneaking to hug them.
  • In-World Map Rendering — draws the map in the world instead of only in first person.
  • In-World Books — a work-in-progress option that renders books with their text visible in the world; it may not always behave correctly.
  • Lantern swinging — adds a swing to lanterns while held.
  • Running animation (easter egg) — a Naruto-style run.
  • Scabbard Sword — deprecated and slated for removal; it only shows the last used sword as a visual effect with no knowledge of your real inventory, so the sword can still appear after you drop it or store it.

Holding Up Items

The Hold Up Items feature makes the player raise items as if examining or presenting them. Its controls include Hold Up Target, Hold Up Camera Offset, and Hold Up Only Self, which restricts the effect to your own player and leaves other players unaffected. Two further settings adjust how far the item is raised and where it points, and another adjusts how far the arm shifts sideways in Camera mode.

Bed and Crossbow Options

Separate toggles stop the player from holding items while in bed and stop arm movement while in bed. For crossbows, Clamp Crossbow Animations limits how far those animations travel.

Work through the list, enable the animations you care about, and adjust the sliders until the movement looks right to you.
