What Not Enough Crashes Does: Crash Screens, Reports, and Mod Lists
Not Enough Crashes is a utility mod that changes what happens when Minecraft runs into a problem, replacing the usual abrupt close with a readable crash screen and, where possible, letting you keep playing.
The Crash Screen
When the game crashes during play, a screen titled Minecraft crashed! appears. Its summary reads that Minecraft ran into a problem and crashed. Below that, the screen lists the mods that have been flagged as possible causes, introduced by the line that the following mod or mods have been identified as potential causes. You are encouraged to send the generated report to the author of the listed mod so they can fix the issue. Because Not Enough Crashes is present, the screen also tells you that you can continue playing despite the crash.
A separate screen handles startup problems. It is titled Minecraft failed to start!, and its summary explains that an error during startup prevented Minecraft from starting. The same advice about contacting the mod author applies, but this screen states that loading cannot continue because of the error.
Reading the Mod List and Report
The mod list on the crash screen is your starting point for figuring out what went wrong. Click any mod in that list to open that mod's website, where you can get support. If the game could not work out a culprit, the list instead shows No Mods., with a note that a mod could still be causing the crash indirectly.
If the identification process itself breaks, the list shows \[Error identifying, report to Not Enough Crashes\]. If the report could not be saved, you will see \[Error saving report, see log\]. A mod marked disabledByConfig is disabled by config. A mod marked \[Failed, Report to NEC\] failed in a way you should report to Not Enough Crashes.
Once a report has been generated, the screen tells you where to find it and lets you click to open it. A Get link button opens the report in your browser.
Settings That Change This Behaviour
The mod's configuration screen is titled Not Enough Crashes Configuration. Its options control how crashes are handled:
- Catch Gameplay Crashes — when false, the mod will not try to stop the game from closing after a crash. This is always disabled when Iris is present, even if the config is set to true.
- Catch Initialization Crashes — available on Fabric only. When false, the game closes normally after a failed initialization instead of showing the special crash screen. This is always disabled when certain other mods are present.
- Disable Return To Main Menu — when true, the Return To Main Menu button is disabled on the crash screen, which means you cannot recover from the crash.
- Debug Mod Identification — when true, extra information is written for the mod developer.
- Crash Limit — how many times the mod will attempt to keep the game from closing in a single session.
Operating the Screen
Everything on the crash screen is clickable or readable directly: select a mod entry to visit its site, use Get link to open the report in your browser, and use Return To Main Menu to get back out of the crash unless that button has been disabled in the config. If you want to reach the configuration screen itself, use the corresponding hotkey and set it in the controls menu.
