Particle Core Guide: Turning Off Particles, Cutting Them by Type, and Using the DECREASED and MINIMAL Dials
Particle Core gives you direct control over how many particles appear on your screen, and this guide covers the settings that remove them entirely, thin them out by type, cap their total number, and fine-tune the two reduction modes.
Removing Particles Completely
The heaviest option is disableParticles. Its impact is rated HIGH, and switching it on stops every particle from appearing on your client. Nothing else in this guide matters while it is active, so treat it as the last resort when you want a clean screen or maximum performance.
Cutting Particles by Type
byTypeReductions has a Medium impact and lets you target individual particle types instead of everything at once. Each type gets its own value, and that value acts as a multiplier on how often the type spawns. Setting a type to a fraction below 1 makes it appear less often — for example, a value of 0.3 on a given type means those particles show up at roughly three tenths of their usual rate. This is useful when one specific effect is causing clutter while the rest are fine.
Capping the Total Count
maxParticlesPerSheet has a Medium impact and sets a ceiling on how many particles can exist at one time. The value can range from 0 up to roughly two billion, and the default is 16,384. Lowering it limits the total load regardless of which types are spawning.
Dialing Between ALL, DECREASED, and MINIMAL
Two Low-impact settings adjust how far the particle modes are turned down.
reduceDecreasedChance takes a value from 0.0 to 1.0 and applies while particles are in ALL mode. It pushes some of them down toward DECREASED. A value of 0.1, for instance, moves about a tenth of them to DECREASED. Think of it as a dial sitting between ALL and DECREASED.
The second dial works the same way one step lower: it takes a value from 0.0 to 1.0 and applies while particles are in DECREASED mode, pushing a portion of them to MINIMAL. A value of 0.1 sends roughly a tenth of them to MINIMAL. This one is the dial between DECREASED and MINIMAL.
Potion Particles
turnOffPotionParticlesV2 has a Low impact and reduces potion particles to varying degrees based on which option you pick. The available choices are:
- Nothing is turned off.
- Particles from other players are removed, but not your own.
- Particles from you are removed.
- Particles from non-player mobs are removed.
- Every potion particle is removed.
Related Settings Worth Knowing
particleRenderDistanceMultiplier has a Medium impact and scales how far away particles are drawn, relative to your block render distance. It accepts values from 0.1 to 1.0, with 1 meaning full render distance. At 0.5 with a render distance of 12 chunks, particles would only appear within 6 chunks.
asynchronousTicking has a Medium impact. When enabled, which is the default, particles update off the client's main loop. This can introduce instability, and Particle Core attempts to switch it off automatically if that happens. If it cannot, you can turn it off yourself. When the particle count is low, the mod ticks them synchronously anyway to avoid the overhead.
cullingBlacklist has a non-performance impact. Particles you add here are skipped by culling, which helps with particles that behave oddly under culling — very large ones especially, if you are culling aggressively.
Culling itself is covered by three options: turning it off entirely (not advised unless you must), culling by a particle's midpoint for the best performance at the cost of occasionally hiding particles that are only slightly in frame, and culling by the edges of the bounding box, which performs well and reduces particles popping out at the screen edge.
To operate any of these, open the mod's interface and toggle or adjust the setting directly; where a hotkey applies, use the corresponding hotkey (set it in the controls menu).
