Opening the Particle Rain Config Screen and Reading Its Main Settings
Particle Rain is configured entirely through its own settings interface, which is titled Particle Rain Config. There is no item to craft and no block to place; you adjust the mod by opening this screen and changing the options inside it.
Getting to the Config Screen
Open the config screen using the corresponding hotkey (set it in the controls menu). Once it is open, the layout is organised into labelled groups rather than a single long list, so you can jump straight to the area you want to change. The main groups are Performance Options, Compatibility Options, and the particle-specific sections such as StreakOptions, RippleOptions, and MistOptions. There are also sections covering biome precipitation and a list of blocks that weather ignores.
Performance Options
This group exists to trade visual fullness for framerate. As the screen itself explains, turning these values down puts fewer particles on screen, which speeds the game up but leaves the effects looking thinner.
- maxParticleAmount — Maximum particle amount. Once the world already holds this many particles, no further weather particles are created.
- particleStormDensity — Particle density during thunderstorms. Sets how many fresh particles appear each tick while a storm is running.
- particleDistance — Sky particle render distance. How far away, in blocks, sky particles become visible.
- surfaceRange — Surface particle render distance. How far away, in blocks, particles generated at the world's surface become visible.
A separate density control governs how many new particles appear per tick under ordinary conditions.
Wind, Mist, and Height
Wind behaviour has its own adjustments. One setting changes how quickly the wind direction drifts over time, while another changes how often gusts occur — a lower frequency makes each gust last longer. yLevelAdjustment (Y-level wind adjustment) strengthens wind at higher altitudes and switches it off beneath ground level.
Mist in wet biomes has its own group of options. Height-related settings include doSpawnHeightLimit (Limit spawn height), which stops weather particles from appearing above the clouds, and spawnHeightLimit (Spawn height limit), which defines the altitude treated as above-cloud spawning. Setting that value to zero makes the mod read the cloud height from the current world instead. useHeightmapTemp (Use heightmap temperature) stops snow from falling in places that should get rain in biomes where weather changes with altitude, such as the Windswept Hills.
Compatibility Options
These options control how Particle Rain coexists with vanilla visuals, shaders, and multiplayer.
- renderDefaultWeather — Render default weather. Shows the standard scrolling weather textures.
- doDefaultSplashing — Do default splashing. Shows the standard splash particles.
- waterTint — Tint water particles with biome colors. Colours rain, streaks, drops, and splashes.
- tintMix — Water sky color contribution. Sets how much tinted water particles pick up the sky colour rather than the water colour.
- shaderpackTint — Don't tint rain when shaders are enabled. Turn this off if Particle Rain is stopping players from joining your LAN server.
- crossBiomeBorder — Cross climate borders. Lets particles drift into climates of a different temperature.
- weatherIgnoreBlocks — Blocks weather ignores. Weather can spawn beneath and fall through the listed blocks rather than being blocked by them.
Particle-Specific Options
The particle sections cover appearance and motion. Available controls include how much a particle rotates each tick, how transparent it is on a scale from fully see-through (0) to fully opaque (100), and constantScreenSize (Constant screen size), which rescales a particle with distance so it keeps the same on-screen size. useResourcepackResolution (Use resource pack resolution) makes a particle use the campfire smoke particle's resolution. Translucency handling is chosen by type; the 'Blended' type lets translucent particles overlap but does not work with shaderpacks as of Minecraft 1.21.5.
Individual particle entries also carry a REGISTERED identifier — the string used to reference that particle in commands and translations — and a spawn frequency relative to overall particle density. Some entries offer needsSkyAccess (Requires access to sky), a wikiLink to view common tags online, and weather conditions such as only during normal weather, only during stormy weather, or during clear skies. A storm wind strength value sets how much a particle rotates per tick. If a list appears empty, enter a world to see suggestions.
