Reduce Particle Rain Particle Counts, Spawn Rates, and Render Distance for Better FPS
Particle Rain adds weather effects that can tax your frame rate, and its config screen gives you several ways to cut that cost. The Performance Options section is the place to start, since its own description explains that lowering these values puts fewer particles on screen and speeds up the game, at the price of thinner-looking effects.
Cap the total particle count
maxParticleAmount sets a ceiling on how many particles can exist at once. Once the world already holds that many, no new weather particles are created. This is the most direct limit on how much work the mod does, so it is a good first target when frames are dropping during rain or storms.
Slow the spawn rate
The spawn rate control decides how many fresh particles appear each tick. A lower value means fewer particles entering the world every tick, which spreads the workload out and keeps the on-screen count down. particleStormDensity does the same job specifically for thunderstorms, so you can keep normal weather fairly rich while thinning out storm effects, or reduce both.
Pull back render distance
Two settings govern how far particles are drawn. particleDistance is the sky particle render distance, measured in blocks — particles beyond that range will not appear. surfaceRange works the same way for particles spawned at the world's surface. Shortening either one removes distant particles from rendering entirely, which helps most in open areas where a lot of weather is visible at once.
Trim wind and mist
Wind behaviour also affects how much motion is on screen. The wind frequency control changes gust length, with lower frequency producing longer gusts, and the wind shift speed controls how quickly the wind changes direction over time. yLevelAdjustment makes wind stronger at higher altitudes and switches it off below ground level, so underground areas stay calm.
Mist in wet biomes has its own options under MistOptions, separate from the main weather particles.
Adjust compatibility and spawn limits
Several options in Compatibility Options change what gets drawn and where particles may appear:
- renderDefaultWeather toggles the default scrolling weather textures.
- doDefaultSplashing toggles the default splash particles.
- doSpawnHeightLimit stops weather particles from spawning above cloud height, and spawnHeightLimit sets the height treated as above-cloud. A value of zero makes the mod use the current world's cloud height.
- weatherIgnoreBlocks lets weather spawn beneath and fall through listed blocks rather than being blocked by them.
- useHeightmapTemp prevents snow from falling where rain is expected in biomes whose weather varies with height, such as the Windswept Hills.
- crossBiomeBorder allows particles to drift into climates of a different temperature.
Tint and appearance settings
waterTint applies biome colours to rain, streaks, drops, and splashes. tintMix controls how much tinted water particles reflect sky colour rather than water colour. shaderpackTint stops rain from being tinted while shaders are active; disabling it is also the fix if Particle Rain is blocking players from joining your LAN server. Particle appearance options cover translucency, constant screen size scaling, and resource pack resolution, while StreakOptions and RippleOptions hold settings for those particle types.
How to open and apply changes
Open the Particle Rain Config screen through its interface, adjust the values above, and apply them. Any hotkey-based actions use the corresponding hotkey, which you set in the controls menu.
