Presence Footsteps Guide: Speed Attenuation and Stance Selection

guide

Presence Footsteps is a sound utility that changes how footsteps are heard in Minecraft. It is configured through its own options screen and a few hotkeys rather than through crafting or items. This guide covers two things: how running changes footstep loudness, and how to pick a walking stance.

Opening the Options

The mod's settings live in the Presence Footsteps Options screen. From there you control volume levels, entity filtering, and stance. Some actions are bound to hotkeys; where a key is not specified here, use the corresponding hotkey and assign it in the controls menu.

Speed Attenuation

Speed Attenuation is the setting that governs how much footstep volume shifts while you run. The value you enter is added on top of your total volume, and the result scales with how fast you are moving. In practice, the faster you go, the more the effect shows up.

Because the change is additive and speed-dependent, it is easy to overshoot. The recommended approach is to start with a small value, listen to the result in motion, and then adjust upward or downward as needed. Larger values produce a more obvious effect; smaller values keep running footsteps closer to normal walking volume.

If you want no speed-based change at all, keep the value low. If you want running to feel noticeably heavier or louder, raise it gradually rather than in one large jump.

Choosing a Stance

The stance setting decides which kind of foot pattern the mod emulates. There are five choices:

  • Auto — selects a suitable stance on its own, based on Mine Little Pony. If that mod is not present, Auto acts the same as Biped.
  • Biped — a two-legged, human-style walk.
  • Quadruped — a four-legged walk.
  • Pegasus — a four-legged walk with wings.
  • Avian — a two-legged walk with wings.

Pick the stance that matches how your character looks or moves. If you use Mine Little Pony, Auto is the least effort since it decides for you. Otherwise, choose Biped for a standard human gait, Quadruped for a four-legged creature, Pegasus for a winged four-legged form, or Avian for a winged two-legged form.

Volume Controls

Several sliders shape what you hear. A global volume tooltip explains that it sets the overall loudness of all Presence Footsteps sounds, and that setting it to zero turns the mod off completely. The Global Volume: OFF state reflects that.

Separate controls exist for:

  • Your own footsteps.
  • Other players' footsteps in multiplayer.
  • Enemies' footsteps.
  • Animals' footsteps.
  • Sounds made on wet blocks.
  • Sounds made when moving through plants and tall grass.

There is also a Disable All Sounds option for muting everything at once.

Entity Filtering

An entity setting limits which creatures produce footstep audio. The choices are Players + Hostiles, which covers other players and hostile mobs, and Only Players, which restricts the sounds to players. A Single + Multiplayer label indicates the mod works in both singleplayer and multiplayer.

Exclusive Mode

Exclusive Mode can be toggled ON or OFF. Use it when you want the mod's sounds handled exclusively rather than blended with other audio.

Sound Packs

The mod relies on sound packs. If none are found, a message appears stating that no sound packs were detected and instructing you to go to resource packs and enable one to get started. The Default Sound Pack is the standard choice.

Updates

The options area can check for updates. While checking, it shows a checking message. If a newer build exists, it reports that an update is available for Presence Footsteps for MC. If not, it reports that you are up to date. If a report cannot be produced, it shows a failure message.

Quick Reference

  • Running too loud or too quiet: adjust Speed Attenuation in small steps.
  • Wrong foot pattern: change the stance to Auto, Biped, Quadruped, Pegasus, or Avian.
  • Nothing audible: check global volume, Disable All Sounds, and whether a sound pack is enabled.
