Rat Riding Upgrades and Mount Gear Guide
Mount Upgrade Basics
Mount upgrades let you turn a rat into a rideable creature. Each one changes what the rat looks like and how it moves. To craft any mount upgrade, you always start with a
Rat Upgrade: Basic Mount as the core ingredient. The other materials determine which mount you get.
Golem Mount
The
Rat Upgrade: Golem Mount turns your rat into a sturdy, stone-bodied companion. To craft it, combine two
Carved Pumpkins, any glass block, four iron blocks, one
Rat Upgrade: Basic Mount, and one emerald block. The golem mount is built for toughness, making it a solid choice when you need a dependable riding rat for rough situations.
Chicken Mount
The
Rat Upgrade: Chicken Mount gives your rat a feathered, bird-like form. Its recipe uses three of any seeds, two
Feathery Wings, one
Rat Upgrade: Basic Mount, two
Raw Chicken, and one egg. This mount is likely faster or more agile on land, suited for quick trips across open ground.
Beast Mount
The
Rat Upgrade: Beast Mount creates a more aggressive, feral riding rat. Craft it with four Plague Leeches, one
Rat Skull, two
Filth, one
Rat Upgrade: Basic Mount, and one
Plague Essence. The beast mount draws on plague-related materials, so it may excel in combat or in dangerous, infected areas.
Strider Mount
The
Rat Upgrade: Strider Mount adapts your rat for hot, hostile terrain. Its recipe requires four
Warped Fungus, two
Nether Cheese, two
Ghast Tears, and one
Rat Upgrade: Basic Mount. As the name suggests, this mount is meant for lava-adjacent environments, letting you ride safely where normal rats could not go.
Flight Upgrade
The
Rat Upgrade: Flight is not a mount itself, but it lets a rat you already ride take to the air. To craft it, gather four lapis lazuli, two
Cheese, two
Feathery Wings, and one
Rat Upgrade: Basic (note: this is the basic upgrade, not the Basic Mount). With this upgrade, your riding rat gains the ability to fly, giving you a mobile aerial vantage point.
Aquatic Upgrade
The
Rat Upgrade: Aquatic improves a rat’s ability to operate underwater. It is crafted from four Barrels of Fish, four
Raw Cod, and one
Rat Upgrade: Extra Breath. While this is not a mount upgrade by itself, it pairs well with riding rats if you plan to explore rivers, oceans, or flooded ruins. It extends the rat’s breath or swimming capability, making underwater rides more practical.
General Riding Tips
- Always craft the
Rat Upgrade: Basic Mount first; every mount recipe depends on it. - Check the mount’s environment before riding. Strider mounts suit hot biomes, while chicken mounts work best on solid ground.
- Use the Flight Upgrade only on a rat that already has a mount upgrade equipped, so you can ride while airborne.
- Combine the Aquatic Upgrade with a mount if you frequently travel through water; it keeps your rat functional beneath the surface.
Choosing the Right Mount
Pick a mount based on your goal. For general travel, the chicken mount offers speed. For dangerous areas, the beast mount provides combat potential. For nether exploration, the strider mount is essential. For pure durability, the golem mount stands strong. If you want vertical mobility, add the flight upgrade to any mount. Plan your materials ahead, since each recipe demands rare items like
Plague Essence or
Ghast Tears. With the right upgrades, your rat becomes a versatile steed for any journey.
