Using Click and Keybind Actions in Roughly Enough Items
Roughly Enough Items (REI) is driven almost entirely by mouse clicks and a few assignable hotkeys, and learning those interactions is the fastest way to move around its interface. This guide covers the click combinations and keybind actions you will use most often.
Recipe Lookup and Navigation
Hovering over an item or recipe entry and clicking opens its recipe view. Once a recipe is open, the arrows beside the tabs let you move between pages: Navigate to Previous Page and Navigate to Next Page do exactly what their names suggest, and clicking the arrows on a recipe itself shows every recipe that falls into the category you are targeting.
For jumping back to something you just viewed, use the Navigate to Previous Page action through the corresponding hotkey (set it in the controls menu). The Focus Search Field action, also bound through the controls menu, moves your cursor straight into the search box.
If you want to copy a recipe's identifier, hover over the recipe's info button — the one marked with a "+" or "?" — and trigger the Copy Recipe Identifier action via its hotkey. You can also export a recipe as an image by hovering over it and pressing the hotkey assigned to that action. Exported images land in the `rei_exports` folder.
Quick Crafting and Cheating
Ctrl-Click performs a Quick Craft, letting you craft directly from the recipe view. This pairs well with the Craftable Filter, which shows only the stacks you can currently make from what is in your inventory.
Shift-Click on the config screen toggles cheat mode. Cheats let you grab items from the side panel, though this needs operator permission; if REI is not present on the server, a command is used instead. Cheating can operate in grab mode, placing the item at your cursor, or give mode, placing it into your inventory. By default REI cheats one item, and a full stack when you shift-click.
Favorites
Entries can be saved for quick access. Press the add this to favorites action to save an entry, and the remove this from favorites action to take it out. You can also drag an entry upward to add it to your favorites, or drag and drop entries to manage them. Favorites persist across reloads, so they stay put between sessions. If you remove one by accident, a hint appears telling you that you can add it back with the + button.
Expanding and Collapsing Entries
Alt-Click expands all entries, and Alt-Click collapses all entries. On some systems the same actions are performed with Option-Click. These work together with Collapsible Groups, which let you bundle entries together and open or close them as a set. Collapsible Entries is the related setting that enables this grouping behavior.
Search Filtering
Double-clicking the search bar toggles a mode that grays out any slot not matching your current search filter. The same double-click gesture toggles inventory search, which lets you find items inside your own inventory. The darkening applied to non-matching items is controlled by the Dim Overlay Opacity setting.
Handy Keybind Actions
Several actions have no fixed key and must be assigned in the controls menu:
- Copy Recipe Identifier — copies a recipe's ID while you hover its info button.
- Export a recipe as an image — saves the recipe you are hovering as a picture.
- Navigate to Previous Page — returns you to the recipes you viewed before.
- Focus Search Field — jumps your cursor to the search box.
Assign these once and they become second nature. Everything else in REI is reachable through the click combinations above, so start with clicking, shift-clicking, ctrl-clicking, and alt-clicking, then layer the hotkeys on top.
