REI Search Filters, Input Methods, Inventory Search and Highlighting Guide

guide

Roughly Enough Items (REI) provides a search bar and a set of filter tools that let you narrow the entry list, locate items in your own inventory, and control which entries appear at all. This guide covers search filters, input methods, inventory search, highlighting, and customized filtering rules.

Search Filters

REI supports several ways to filter entries. Each filter type matches entries by a different property:

  • Filter by the entry's identifier.
  • Filter by the mod the entry belongs to.
  • Filter by the contents of the entry's tooltip, which is useful for finding details such as enchantments.
  • Filter by the tags an entry is contained in.

Filters can be displayed in different colors so you can tell them apart more easily; one available style is Colorful & Underscored. Some filters can be activated by typing a prefix, using the Activate with Prefix option.

Search can run across multiple threads in parallel, which generally improves speed and responsiveness. The first search is slower than later ones, and REI shows progress while it caches and searches results. A Syntax Highlighting option is also available.

Input Methods

The default search behavior does not transform your search term. Alternative input methods exist for matching Chinese characters:

  • Jyutping (Cantonese)
  • Pinyin (Mandarin)
  • Bopomofo (Mandarin)
  • Double Pinyin (Mandarin), which has a Double Pinyin Scheme... setting

If alternative input methods apply to your language, REI shows a hint about them. After you set one up, you can reconfigure it later with the Search Filter Button.

Inventory Search and Highlighting

Inventory Search lets you search for items inside your own inventory, which helps you find things quickly. Toggle it by double clicking the search bar.

When the search filter is active, slots that do not match can be grayed out. This mode is also toggled by double clicking the search bar. Two related settings control the overlays:

  • Dim Overlay Opacity sets how dark the overlay is for items that do not match the filter.
  • A separate opacity setting controls the green overlay for items that do match.

Inventory Highlighting On is the setting that enables highlighting. You can also hide the entry panel while you are not searching.

Favorites

Favorites sit on the opposite side of the entry panel, persist across reloads, and give quick access to entries you are working on. Press the corresponding hotkey (set it in the controls menu) to add or remove a favorite, or drag and drop entries to do the same. You can also drag an entry upward to add it to favorites. If you remove a favorite, REI can show a hint explaining how to add it back with the + button. An Append Favorites Hint option shows a hint about how to favorite an entry or recipe.

Customized Filtering

Customized Filtering lets you create filtering rules that hide or show specific entries in the entry list. The Customized Filtering Rules screen includes a Create Filtering Rule action. Rules can be built in two ways:

  • Manually select what to hide and show.
  • Filter using search filters.

Filtering rules can also be applied to determine the visibility of displays; a display whose entries are all filtered out will be hidden. Displays sharing the same recipe can be merged, which helps unify recipes.

Beyond your own rules, entries are also filtered by REI plugins and by the `c:hidden_from_recipe_viewers` tag. Neither of these is configurable from the rules screen.
