Configuring Per-Dimension Fog Distance and the FPS/Coordinates Overlay in Embeddium Extra
Embeddium Extra adds a range of visual and performance options on top of Embeddium, and two areas players tune most often are fog distance and the on-screen FPS and coordinates overlay. Both are handled from the mod's own settings rather than through any in-game item or crafting step.
Fog Distance Controls
Fog distance is adjusted with a slider that sets how far terrain fog renders. The scale is fixed: a value of 0 keeps vanilla fog behaviour, values from 1 to 32 set the fog distance in chunks, and 33 pushes fog out to its maximum distance, which effectively disables it.
Two sliders exist for this. The Single Fog slider applies one fog distance across every dimension. The per-dimension sliders apply separately to each dimension. Which set is active depends on the Multi Dimension Fog option:
- When Multi Dimension Fog is enabled, the per-dimension sliders are the ones processed.
- When it is disabled, only the single fog slider is processed.
Changing Multi Dimension Fog does not update the sliders immediately. After toggling it, leave the menu and open it again before the correct sliders appear.
A separate option, Fog Start Multiplier, adjusts when terrain fog begins to render for the player, so you can control how early or late the fog closes in independently of the overall distance.
There is also a setting that determines how fog is modified in the first place. It offers a default mode and a mod compatibility mode that routes fog changes through the Forge event for better compatibility with other mods. Be aware that when the mod compatibility mode is active, your fog distance settings may be ignored. That behaviour is expected, not a fault.
FPS and Coordinates Overlay
The overlay shows your current FPS and your player coordinates on screen. Each part is toggled on its own:
- The option for displaying player coordinates controls whether coordinates appear on the overlay.
- The option for displaying the current FPS controls whether the frame rate appears.
- An additional option adds extra frame rate information alongside the current FPS, showing maximum, average, and minimum values.
The overlay's position is set by an option that determines which corner of the screen it renders in.
Its readability is handled by a contrast setting with three choices:
- None leaves plain white text.
- Background draws a background behind the text, similar to the debug menu.
- Shadow renders plain white text with a shadow.
Related Display Options
Several other settings sit alongside these and affect what you see on screen, including toggles for rendering the sky, stars, sun and moon, rain and snow, biome-based sky colours, biome-based colour changes, clouds, and cloud height and render distance. There are also toggles for name tags on players and item frames, beacon beams, paintings, item frames, armor stands, and enchanting table books, plus options covering animations for fire, lava, portals, water, sculk sensors, and blocks.
If you enable the steady debug HUD refresh, the debug HUD updates at an interval you set in ticks using the matching interval option.
