Asphalt and Sidewalk Surfaces via Stonecutting

guide

Asphalt and Sidewalk are the two road surfaces in Saro's Road Blocks, and both come from a Stonecutter rather than a crafting table. Feed Blackstone into the saw and you get Asphalt; feed Andesite and you get Sidewalk. That is the whole recipe list — two stonecutting conversions, five blocks out per input block.

What you need before you start

The Stonecutter is the only station involved. There is no crafting table step, no furnace step, and no extra binding material to gather. If you can make a Stonecutter and source one of the two input rocks, you can make the matching road surface.

Because the two inputs are unrelated stone types, you are not choosing between them at the saw — you are choosing which road surface you want and then going to get the right rock. A player who wants a dark, paved-looking road mines Blackstone. A player who wants a lighter, slab-grey walkway mines Andesite.

Why stonecutting instead of crafting

The Stonecutter's advantage is yield. A single input block returns five output blocks, so a stack of Blackstone becomes five stacks of Asphalt at the same cost in raw material. That ratio is what makes road building practical: long stretches of road stop being a stone sink and start being a quarrying trip.

It also means you should never convert your inputs one at a time as you place them. Cut in bulk. Bring your Blackstone or Andesite home, run the whole load through the Stonecutter in one sitting, and carry the finished surfaces out to the build site. The Stonecutter interface keeps the recipe selected, so repeat cuts are quick.

Getting the inputs

Blackstone is the Nether-side material here. It generates in the Nether, which means an Asphalt road project starts with a portal trip rather than a mining trip in the overworld. Plan for that: bring enough inventory space that one Nether excursion covers the full length of road you intend to lay, because making the trip twice for the same road is wasted time.

Andesite is the overworld counterpart and is far easier to accumulate. It shows up in ordinary stone terrain, so a Sidewalk project can be supplied from surface mining or from the tailings of a larger dig. If you are already clearing stone for a build, you are probably banking Andesite without trying.

Mixing the two surfaces

Nothing in the recipes forces you to pick one surface for a whole build. Asphalt and Sidewalk come from different rocks and different dimensions, but they place side by side like any other block. The natural division is functional: Asphalt for the carriageway where you want a dark paved read, Sidewalk for the pedestrian edge where you want a lighter band.

That split also solves a supply problem. Andesite is cheap and local, Blackstone is neither, so use the plentiful Sidewalk for the long verges and kerbs and reserve the Asphalt for the road proper. A build that leans on Sidewalk for its bulk will need far fewer Nether trips than one that paves everything in Asphalt.

Practical notes

  • Both recipes produce five blocks per input, so calculate your input count as one fifth of the road length you need.
  • Keep Blackstone and Andesite in separate chests near the Stonecutter. Mixing them invites cutting the wrong recipe and ending up with a surface you did not want.
  • Cut before you travel. Converting on site means hauling a Stonecutter and the raw rock out with you instead of just the finished blocks.
  • The two surfaces are independent recipes, so you can run an Asphalt batch and a Sidewalk batch from the same Stonecutter without any setup change beyond reselecting the recipe.

Summary

Two stonecutting recipes cover every road surface in the mod: Blackstone to Asphalt, Andesite to Sidewalk, five blocks each. The only real decision is logistical — whether the road you are building justifies a Nether mining trip for Blackstone, or whether a locally sourced Andesite run will do.
