Shulker Box Tooltip Controls: Preview, Full Preview, and Locking
Shulker Box Tooltip shows what is inside a container item without opening it, and its basic controls are simple once you know which actions exist. This guide covers opening a stack preview, opening a full preview, and locking a tooltip in place.
Opening a Preview
Hover over a container stack and press the hotkey bound to Open Stack Preview. A preview window appears showing the contents of that stack. You do not need to place the container or open it normally.
If you would rather not press anything, there is a setting for that. The tooltip option tied to the preview key makes the preview appear at all times, whether or not the preview key is held or pressed. Turn it on if you want previews to show up automatically whenever you hover a container stack.
Opening a Full Preview
For a larger view of a container's contents, hover the stack and press the hotkey bound to Open Stack Full Preview. This opens the full preview window rather than the smaller one.
There is also a setting that swaps the two modes. When enabled, pressing the preview key opens the full preview instead of the standard one. That way you can keep one key as your main preview control and still reach the full view.
Locking a Tooltip
While a preview is on screen, you can hold the corresponding hotkey to lock the tooltip. Locking keeps the tooltip in place so it does not disappear when your cursor moves away.
Assigning the Hotkeys
None of these actions come with a key listed here. Open the controls menu and set your own bindings for Open Stack Preview, Open Stack Full Preview, and the lock action. Choose keys that do not clash with what you already use.
Settings Worth Knowing
Several options change how previews behave:
- Colored Preview Window controls whether the preview window uses color.
- The position setting decides where the preview sits. Inside places it within the item's tooltip. Outside places it beyond the tooltip and shifts it based on screen edges. Outside (top) pins it to the top of the tooltip, and Outside (bottom) pins it to the bottom.
- The theme setting picks the look of preview windows. ShulkerBoxTooltip uses the mod's own default appearance, while Vanilla copies the style of vanilla bundle previews.
- Hide Shulker Box Lore removes custom text from shulker box tooltips. This is useful when a server-side preview datapack conflicts with the mod.
- short item counts shortens large counts shown in compact previews.
- compact preview nbt behavior decides how items sharing an ID but differing in component data are handled in compact mode. Ignored drops component data from consideration. First Item treats every entry as having the same components as the first one. Separate keeps items with different component data apart.
- The maximum items per row setting controls how many items fit in one row. It may not apply to modded containers.
- Generic Container Preview makes items carrying the container data component show a preview even when they are not explicitly supported, treating them like shulker boxes.
- Server Integration lets the client send packets to servers so extra preview information, such as ender chest previews, becomes available.
- Client Integration gives servers control over extra container information sent to clients with the mod. Turning it off disables the options beneath it. The prefix note explains that these are server-set options, so changing them on multiplayer from this menu will not alter the server's configuration.
- ender chest sync type changes how ender chest previews synchronize. None stops synchronization entirely, so clients cannot preview their ender chest. Active synchronizes contents when they change. Passive synchronizes when the client opens a preview.
- Loot Table Info Type shows loot table details when present, and only appears when the tooltip type is Modded. Hide shows nothing, Simple indicates whether the stack uses a loot table, and Advanced names the loot table in use.
- The tooltip setting chooses between the vanilla tooltip, which lists the first five items, the mod's own tooltip, or no tooltip at all.
- A separate option controls whether key hints appear in a container's tooltip.
Configuration Notes
The configuration screen is titled ShulkerBoxTooltip Configuration. If you try to leave after editing, a confirm prompt asks whether to quit and discard changes, with a warning that your changes will be lost. Some modifications trigger a restart required notice, meaning the change takes effect only after restarting. An ignore restart choice lets you continue without restarting. Numeric fields must be greater than zero, and invalid color codes are rejected.
