Sodium Extra Settings, Features, and the Reese's Sodium Options Companion
Sodium Extra is a Minecraft utility mod that brings most of OptiFine's visual extras to Sodium. Alongside those eye-candy options, it adds visual bug fixes and performance options that Sodium itself does not yet offer — features that, by design, sit outside Sodium's scope.
What Sodium Extra Covers
The mod's options fall into a few broad groups:
- Particle toggles for dozens of individual effects, each with its own switch, so you can keep the particles you like and drop the ones you don't. Examples include campfire smoke types, dripping and falling dripstone, sculk-related effects, explosion and firework particles, and many more.
- Animation toggles for fire, lava, portals, water, sculk sensors, blocks, and a master switch for all animations.
- Entity and block rendering toggles for armor stands, beacon beams, item frames, paintings, enchanting table books, piston animations, rain and snow, and rain splash particles.
- Fog controls, including global fog settings, per-dimension fog, cloud fog, sky fog, render-distance border fade, and advanced options such as camera distance mode and environment start distance.
- Overlay options for FPS, coordinates, and extended FPS stats, plus corner placement and readability style.
- Toast popups for advancements, recipes, tutorials, and system messages.
- Miscellaneous options such as advanced item tooltips (showing an item's identifier and durability), item frame name tags, player name tags, biome-based sky and color blending, cloud height override, beacon beam height limiting, and a Panini projection with its own strength slider.
Some options carry caveats worth knowing. The Light Updates Warning toggle hides debug HUD warnings about light updates, and the lighting update toggle can cause incorrect lighting while chunks generate — both are meant for users who understand the trade-offs. Reduce Resolution on macOS needs a restart to change. Multi Dimension Fog requires closing and reopening the menu to refresh the fog sliders. The Wayland/XWayland Fullscreen Resolution option is experimental and will disable itself and reset fullscreen if a chosen mode prevents a clean start.
Accessing the Settings
Sodium Extra is configured entirely through its interface and hotkeys — there is nothing to craft. Open the mod's settings screen to reach the options above. Individual actions, such as toggling an overlay or a specific effect, are bound to the corresponding hotkey, which you set in the controls menu. No default key is assumed; assign whatever is comfortable for you.
Why Reese's Sodium Options Is Recommended
Sodium Extra strongly recommends pairing it with Reese's Sodium Options. As Sodium Extra's feature count has grown, Sodium's video options screen becomes difficult to navigate on its own. Reese's Sodium Options provides a clearer way to move through those settings, so the two are meant to be used together.
If you only remember one thing: Sodium Extra handles the extra visual and performance options, its settings live in its own interface and hotkeys, and Reese's Sodium Options is the companion that keeps those settings manageable.
