Sophisticated Backpacks: Tiers, Upgrades, and Customization

guide

Sophisticated Backpacks adds upgradable, highly customizable backpacks for portable storage. This guide covers tiers, upgrades and use.

Backpack tiers

Backpacks come in multiple tiers, each offering more storage capacity and support for more upgrades. You start with a basic backpack and craft your way up, carrying the contents forward as you upgrade to larger tiers.

Upgrades

The mod's depth is in its upgrades, slotted into the backpack to add functions — such as automatic pickup, filtering, stacking, crafting, smelting, feeding and more. Higher tiers hold more upgrade slots, so a top-tier backpack can behave like a portable automated inventory.

Wearing and customizing

A backpack can be worn by the player or placed in the world like a block for access, and opened directly with the Open Backpack key. You can personalize its look with a main color and an accent color, giving each backpack a recognizable appearance. Between tiers, upgrades and colors, Sophisticated Backpacks turns portable storage into a tailored tool.

Thirteen upgrades, and each has an advanced tier

The upgrade list is the mod. Every one below exists in a basic and an advanced form, where advanced adds finer filtering:

  • Pickup — the backpack collects items on its own; Magnet does the same at range
  • Deposit and Restock — sneak right-click a chest to push into it or pull from it
  • Refill — keeps a chosen stack topped up in your inventory, and lets you middle-click blocks straight out of the backpack
  • Feeding — eats from the backpack for you; Alchemy does the same with potions, effect foods and milk
  • Compacting — turns items into their compressed forms, both 2x2 and 3x3
  • Filter — controls what pipes in and out; Void deletes what you list
  • Pump — moves fluid between a Tank upgrade and adjacent blocks, held containers or fluid in the world
  • Mob Catcher — sneak right-click captures mobs, hostile ones included, into storage slots
  • Jukebox — plays discs from the backpack

The three worth having first are Pickup, Magnet and Refill; together they mean you rarely open the backpack at all.

The tier ladder is 22 recipes

Upgrade Next Tier carries 22 recipes, which is how a backpack moves up rather than being recrafted — you never lose the contents or the upgrades already installed. Alongside it sit 5 Backpack Upgrade recipes, 1 Smithing Backpack Upgrade and the single Basic Backpack craft that starts everything.

No blocks at all

71 pages, 71 items, zero blocks. Nothing here is placed — the backpack is worn or held, and every upgrade goes inside it.

Version note

The builds are 3.25.78 on 1.21.1 and 3.24.67 on 1.20.1, differing by a single crafting recipe. The upgrade list is identical.
