Sounds Mod Config Screen, Mod Options, and QualitySounds Conflict Warning
The Sounds mod is configured entirely through its own config screen, where you can control sound effects for inventory actions, chat, status effects, and more. This guide covers how to reach that screen, what the mod-specific options do, and what to do when the mod reports a conflict with QualitySounds.
Opening the Config Screen
The config screen is the main place where every sound option lives. You reach it through the Sounds button. That button normally appears in the vanilla sound mixer menu, so open the sound mixer and look for it there.
If you prefer not to see that button in the mixer, turn on Hide Button In Sound Mixer Menu. With this option enabled, the Sounds button is hidden from the vanilla sound mixer screen, keeping that menu clean. You will need another way to reach the config screen once it is hidden, so only enable this if you are comfortable with that.
Mod-Specific Options
Beyond the individual sound toggles, the mod exposes a small set of options that affect the mod itself rather than any single sound.
- Hide Button In Sound Mixer Menu — controls whether the Sounds button is shown in the vanilla sound mixer screen, as described above.
- Enable Verbose Sound Type Logging — when enabled, the mod writes detailed information about block sound types to the console. This is intended for debugging, so leave it off during normal play unless you are trying to track down a problem.
The QualitySounds Incompatibility Warning
If the mod detects that QualitySounds is present alongside it, a warning appears with the title Incompatability Detected. The message explains that having both mods active at the same time is not supported.
The reason given is that Sounds already contains all of the sound effects and functionality that QualitySounds provides. Running both together causes conflicts with Sounds' mixins, which can lead to duplicated sounds as well as other problems and crashes.
The recommended action is to uninstall the QualitySounds mod. Sounds is described as fully feature-complete compared to QualitySounds, and more customizable. For example, with Sounds you can adjust place, fall, break, and step sounds for blocks that have custom sound effects applied, including changing their pitch and volume. QualitySounds does not offer those adjustments.
Reading Error Messages
Two error messages can appear while working with sounds. The first is titled Failed to play sound. and reports that an error occurred while trying to play a sound, asking whether the sound event ID is valid. The second reports that an error occurred while trying to preview a sound effect, again asking whether the sound event ID is valid.
In both cases the fix is the same: check the sound event ID you entered. The ID is the unique identifier used to play that sound in the game, so a typo or an ID that does not exist will produce these errors.
A Note on Block Sounds
Block sounds are managed through resource packs rather than through the config screen. If you want to return to the game's default block sounds, enable Disable All Modified Block Sounds, which turns off every block sound that has been modified through a resource pack. You can also maintain a list of blocks under ignoredBlocks so that no custom sound definitions apply to them, even when those blocks belong to a tag with sound settings attached.
