Finding and Looting Mars Temples, Ruins, Towers, and Mazes
Overview
Mars structures are scattered across all Martian biomes. Each generates with its own spacing rules, so you will rarely find two of the same type close together. Bring light sources, blocks for bridging, and a good melee weapon before setting out.
Mars Main Temple
The Mars Main Temple is the rarest and largest structure on the planet. It attempts to generate once per 80x80 chunk region, and no two can appear closer than 40 chunks apart. This makes it the most difficult to locate, but it typically holds the richest loot and lore.
To find one, travel in a straight line for long distances, then turn 90 degrees and sweep parallel paths. Because the minimum distance is so large, you can safely ignore any area within 40 chunks of a known temple. The temple itself is visually distinct, with tall walls and a central chamber. Search every room, including upper ledges and lower corridors, for chests and hidden compartments.
Mars Maze
The Mars Maze generates once per 60x60 chunk region, with a minimum separation of 30 chunks. It is a labyrinth of corridors and dead ends, often containing loot at the center or along branching paths.
When you enter a maze, mark your path. Place torches on the right wall only, or break blocks to leave a trail. If you find a dead end, backtrack to your last unmarked junction. The maze may have multiple levels, so check for staircases or holes in the floor. Loot chests are usually placed in the deeper sections, so do not stop at the first few rooms. If you get lost, dig straight up or down to escape, but be ready for the surface to be far above or below.
Mars Ruins
The Mars Ruins are the most common structure, generating once per 40x40 chunk region with a minimum distance of 20 chunks. They appear as broken walls, partial columns, and scattered debris. Despite their small size, they often contain useful early-game supplies.
Search every intact block and container. Ruins may have buried sections, so look for slightly raised ground or cracks in the floor. Some ruins have a single chest, while others have several hidden behind collapsed walls. Because they are frequent, you can use them as waypoints while exploring for rarer structures.
Mars Temple
The Mars Temple is a medium-sized structure, generating once per 50x50 chunk region with a minimum separation of 30 chunks. It is smaller than the Main Temple but more common. The exterior is usually symmetrical, with a clear entrance.
Inside, you will find a series of rooms connected by narrow hallways. Check for pressure plates and tripwires—some temples have traps. Loot is often placed in the innermost room or at the top of a central spire. Climb any ladders or stairs you see, and look for hidden doors behind tapestries or in corners. If a wall looks different from the others, try mining through it.
Mars Tower
The Mars Tower generates under the same rules as the Mars Temple: once per 50x50 chunk region, at least 30 chunks apart. Towers are vertical structures, often several stories tall, with a spiral staircase or ladder running through the center.
Climb methodically, checking every floor for chests and lore items. The top floor usually holds the best reward, but the climb may be long. Bring blocks to fill gaps in the stairs, and watch for drop shafts. Some towers have exterior balconies with hidden niches. If you fall, you will need to climb again, so consider building a safe landing spot at the base before you start.
General Exploration Tips
- All five structures generate only in Martian biomes, so do not waste time searching in other dimensions or biome types.
- Because each structure has a minimum spacing, once you find one, you can move diagonally away to look for the next without overlap.
- Carry a clock or compass to keep your bearings, and mark your base coordinates before leaving.
- Loot quality generally scales with structure rarity: ruins give basic supplies, temples and towers give mid-tier gear, and the Main Temple gives the best rewards.
- Lore items, if found, are often in the largest structure of each type. Read them in your inventory to piece together the history of Mars.
