Stellaris Moon Biomes, Caves, and the Void of Space Guide
Moon Biomes Overview
The Moon in Stellaris is divided into two primary biomes: the Moon Caves and the Moon Desert. Both share identical climate conditions, making them distinct from many other dimensions or planetary surfaces you might encounter.
Climate and Weather
Both the Moon Caves and the Moon Desert have a temperate climate with a temperature value of 0.5. This means you will not experience extreme heat or cold while exploring these areas. Additionally, there is no rain on the Moon in either biome. You can leave your rain gear behind, but you should still prepare for the other hazards that await.
Hostile Mobs
The Moon is not empty. In both the Moon Caves and the Moon Desert, you will encounter the same set of hostile creatures:
- Alien Zombie – A dangerous undead variant that behaves similarly to standard zombies but with a lunar twist. Expect it to chase you relentlessly and deal significant damage in melee combat.
- Star Crawler – A faster, more agile threat that can close distance quickly. It is best to engage these creatures with ranged attacks or while maintaining a safe distance.
Because both biomes share the same spawn list, you do not need to prepare differently for the caves versus the desert. Your combat strategy should remain consistent regardless of which Moon biome you are in.
Moon Caves
The Moon Caves biome is an underground environment. Despite being called caves, the temperate climate still applies, so you won't need special thermal gear. However, the lack of rain means you should bring your own water supply if you plan an extended stay. The primary dangers here are the Alien Zombie and Star Crawler spawns, which can appear in the darkness. Always light your path and keep your weapon ready.
Moon Desert
The Moon Desert biome is the surface counterpart to the caves. It shares the same temperate, rain-free conditions. The desert terrain may offer less cover, making it easier for hostile mobs to spot you from a distance. Use the open space to your advantage by keeping track of approaching enemies early. As with the caves, the Alien Zombie and Star Crawler are your main threats.
The Void of Space
Beyond the Moon's biomes lies the void of space. This area has a starkly different climate: it is snowy, with a temperature of -0.7. This is significantly colder than the Moon's surface, so you will need appropriate protection against the cold. There is no rain in space, but that is the least of your concerns.
The void itself is a hostile environment. You will need to manage your movement carefully, as there is no natural ground to stand on. Prepare for low gravity and the constant risk of drifting. The cold temperature means that without proper insulation, you will suffer from exposure. Bring gear that provides cold resistance or warmth before venturing into this region.
Practical Tips
- For the Moon: Wear standard combat armor. The temperate climate means you don't need extreme temperature protection, but you do need armor that can withstand hits from Alien Zombies and Star Crawlers.
- For Space: Switch to cold-resistant equipment. The -0.7 temperature is harsh, and you will need to prioritize warmth over other stats.
- Lighting: In the Moon Caves, darkness is your enemy. Carry plenty of torches or other light sources to reduce surprise attacks.
- Water: Neither the Moon biomes nor space have rain. Bring your own water or find alternative sources before long expeditions.
- Combat: Ranged weapons are recommended against Star Crawlers due to their speed. Melee is viable against Alien Zombies if you can corner them.
Summary
The Moon offers two temperate, rain-free biomes—Moon Caves and Moon Desert—that share the same hostile mobs. The void of space, however, is a frigid, snowy environment with no rain and a much lower temperature. Prepare accordingly: moderate protection for the Moon, and heavy cold resistance for space. Always stay alert for Alien Zombies and Star Crawlers no matter where you go.
