Opening the Stendhal Interface, Settings, and Books and Signs Folders
Stendhal is controlled entirely through its own interface and hotkeys rather than through crafting recipes, so the first step in using any of its tools is simply getting that interface onto your screen.
Opening the Interface
Stendhal does not require you to build or craft anything to reach its features. Its controls live in the mod's own interface, which you bring up with the corresponding hotkey (set it in the controls menu). Because the mod is hotkey-driven, the same approach applies to every action it offers: find the action you want, then trigger it with the key you have assigned to it.
Accessing Settings
Settings are reached the same way as the rest of the mod's features — through the interface, using the corresponding hotkey (set it in the controls menu). Once you are in the settings area, you can review and adjust how the mod behaves. If a particular control does not respond, the most common cause is that no key has been bound to it yet, so check your key assignments first.
Books and Signs Folders
Stendhal keeps two separate storage locations on disk, and both are listed in its settings:
- Saved Books folder: — where exported books are written and where books are read from when you import one.
- Saved Signs folder: — the equivalent location for signs.
These two entries tell you exactly where the mod looks when it loads content from disk and where it puts content when it saves. If you want to move files in or out, or back them up, these are the folders to open.
Working with Books
Book-related actions are available through the interface and their hotkeys. The available operations include:
- Importing a book from disk, and exporting a book to disk.
- Clearing all book pages at once, or clearing just a single page.
- Copying the pages of the current world into memory, and pasting those stored pages back into a book.
- Copying a page's content and style into memory, and pasting that content and style back.
- Creating a blank page after the current one, and removing the current page while shifting the remaining pages to close the gap.
- Pasting your clipboard contents at the caret position.
- Resetting the style from the caret position onward, and stripping all styling so only the text remains.
- Switching between the colors list and the unicodes list.
Two error messages can appear while saving a book. If the name you supply is too short, you will be told to enter a title of at least three characters. If a book with that name already exists, you will be informed that a book under the same name has already been saved.
Working with Signs
Sign actions follow the same pattern:
- Clearing a sign of all its text.
- Copying a sign's content into memory for the current world, and pasting that stored content back onto a sign.
- Exporting a sign to disk, and importing a sign from disk.
When a sign is loaded from disk, a confirmation appears with the subtitle "Your Sign has been loaded!" and a message asking you to edit the sign again and use the Paste Sign button.
