Upgrading Charms of Life and Keeping in Twilight Forest

guide

Charms of Life and Charms of Keeping in The Twilight Forest offer consumable death protection and item retention when surviving dangerous dungeon complexes and boss towers. Carrying these talismans inside the inventory mitigates the penalty of death, preventing catastrophic equipment loss during progression runs.

Finding and Upgrading Charms of Keeping

Charm of Keeping talismans prevent inventory scattering upon death. They cannot be manufactured from raw ores; players must discover baseline charms in dungeon structures and combine them into higher tiers:

  • Charm of Keeping I: dropped by hostile Maze Slime mobs in underground labyrinths. Baseline charms also generate inside treasure chests within dungeon basements, Darktower caches, and subterranean labyrinth corridors.
  • Charm of Keeping II: crafted by combining four Charm of Keeping I items together in a two-by-two crafting grid. It also generates as rare loot inside Fancy Well chests.
  • Charm of Keeping III: crafted by combining four Charm of Keeping II items together in a two-by-two crafting grid.

Inventory Retention by Tier

Each tier of the talisman preserves a distinct portion of the player's possessions when taking fatal damage:

  • Charm of Keeping I: shatters upon death to preserve all currently equipped armor pieces along with whatever items were held in the main hand and off-hand slots. All remaining inventory contents drop at the death site.
  • Charm of Keeping II: shatters upon death to preserve all equipped armor pieces as well as the entire nine-slot hotbar.
  • Charm of Keeping III: shatters upon death to preserve the player's complete inventory, including all backpack slots, armor pieces, hotbar slots, and held items. The player respawns with their entire loadout completely intact.

Finding and Upgrading Charms of Life

The Charm of Life intercepts lethal damage and restores player health before death occurs:

  • Charm of Life I: discovered inside dungeon loot containers, appearing in Fancy Well caches, Fallen Trunk cavities, Tree Cache chests, and Tower Room chests.
  • Charm of Life II: crafted by combining four Charm of Life I items together in a two-by-two crafting grid.

Lethal Damage Interception Mechanics

Charms trigger automatically from anywhere inside the player's main inventory:

  • When health drops to zero with a Charm of Life I in the inventory, the charm shatters instantly. It negates the fatal blow, restores several hearts of health, and applies brief defensive status buffs to help the player disengage from combat.
  • When lethal damage occurs with a Charm of Life II in the inventory, the higher-tier talisman shatters, restores the player's health bar completely to full, and applies extensive regeneration and protection buffs.
