The Undergarden: Exploring the Subterranean Dimension
The Undergarden is a dark dimension hidden deep below the Overworld's bedrock, full of glowing flora and strange creatures. This guide covers reaching and surviving it.
Entering the Undergarden
The Undergarden lies deep underground, and you reach it through the mod's own portal built from its materials. Beyond it waits a subterranean world where the flora has adapted to grow anywhere, independent of light, giving the dimension its distinctive glowing landscape.
Dangers and creatures
The Undergarden is home to over ten unique entities. Many are peaceful, but the land is plagued by the invasive Rotspawn — monsters from a chaotic, mysterious realm — so come prepared for combat as you explore the caverns.
What to gather
The dimension adds its own metals and materials to mine and build with, found among its caves and biomes. Explore to collect the Undergarden's ores and gear, deal with the Rotspawn threat, and use the glowing blocks and flora for builds. It plays as a self-contained underground survival adventure beneath the world you know.
The newer build has systems the old one lacks
Two recipe categories exist only on 1.21.1 and are entirely absent from 1.20.1:
- Infuser Conversion — 4 recipes
- Campfire Cooking — 5 recipes
Crafting also grew substantially, from 180 recipes to 209, and stonecutting from 49 to 59. If a recipe from a video is missing in your game, the version is the likely cause.
What the mod contains
350 pages across 212 blocks and 138 items, with four structures. The block majority points at what the dimension is for: material.
Processing is ordinary
30 smelting and 21 blasting recipes handle ores and materials through vanilla machines, so no special processing block is needed to start using what you mine.
Six smithing transforms
The gear upgrades run through a smithing table and number six on both versions — a short, stable list that is worth learning in full since it does not change between builds.
Practical first steps
Get in, mine one of each unfamiliar ore, and smelt at home. With 59 stonecutting recipes on the newer build, the building side opens up as soon as you have the stone.
