Iron Tier Upgrade and Expanding Backpack Capacity

An Iron Tier Upgrade in Traveler's Backpack expands the inventory slots, fluid tank volume, and module capacity of a standard leather backpack to iron rank.

Crafting the Iron Tier Upgrade Plate

Before applying the expansion to your pack, assemble the iron upgrade component at a crafting table:

  • Place 1 Blank Upgrade plate in the center slot of a standard crafting table.
  • Surround the blank upgrade plate with Iron Ingots along the top, bottom, left, and right slots.
  • Insert pieces of leather into the four outer corner slots of the crafting grid to reinforce the mounting brackets.
  • Retrieve the completed Iron Tier Upgrade from the crafting output slot.
  • Blank upgrades serve as the universal foundation plate for all tier upgrade progression pathways across the mod.

Crafting several blank upgrades in advance simplifies upgrading your secondary expedition backpacks later.

Applying the Upgrade to Your Backpack

Upgrading your backpack is completely safe and preserves all contained belongings:

  • Open a crafting table or your personal inventory crafting grid.
  • Place your worn or placed Standard Traveler's Backpack (or themed variant like the Bat, Bee, or Blaze pack) into any crafting slot.
  • Place 1 Iron Tier Upgrade and pieces of leather alongside the backpack in the crafting matrix.
  • Take the newly reinforced Iron Traveler's Backpack from the output slot.
  • All stored items, filled fluid tanks, attached sleeping bags, and slotted upgrade cartridges remain completely intact throughout the upgrading process.
  • Dyed leather colors and custom names applied to the pack are also fully preserved after the iron plate is applied.

Players never need to empty their inventory compartments before applying a tier expansion.

Stat Increases and Functional Advantages

Advancing your backpack to the Iron tier delivers immediate survival benefits:

  • Expands internal storage capacity by multiple additional slot rows, allowing dozens more item stacks to be transported on long mining runs.
  • Increases the maximum liquid capacity of both the left and right fluid tanks, enabling storage of larger volumes of water, lava, or potion buffs.
  • Unlocks additional utility cartridge bays, allowing players to install combinations like the Crafting Upgrade, Magnet Upgrade, and Feeding Upgrade simultaneously.
  • Establishes the required foundation tier for future progression toward Gold, Diamond, and Netherite tier upgrades.
  • Equips your character with sufficient storage volume to embark on extended multi-biome expeditions without returning to base.
