Choosing Which Wake Effects Appear for Boats, Players, Mobs, and Items in Wakes
Wakes lets you decide, separately, what kind of effect shows up when different things travel through water. The mod includes a dedicated section for this called Effect Spawning Rules, and the options inside it let you pick an effect for each type of moving object. This guide explains what each of those choices controls and how to reach the rest of the mod's settings.
The Effect Spawning Rules Section
The Effect Spawning Rules area is where you assign an effect to each category of moving thing. Each entry asks what should be visible when that particular kind of object travels through water:
- Boats — the effect shown when a boat moves through water.
- You (the player) — the effect shown when you move through water.
- Other players — the effect shown when other players move through water.
- Mobs — the effect shown when mobs move through water.
- Items — the effect shown when an item moves through water.
Setting these individually means you can have, for example, a wake behind boats while leaving items without one, or any other combination you prefer. Each rule is independent, so changing one does not force a change in the others.
Reaching the Configuration
Open the mod's settings through the Mod configurations button. From there, the Configure wake colors button takes you to the color editing screen.
Editing Wake Colors
The color editing screen is built around a Color Interval Slider. Its on-screen instructions describe the following controls:
- Click a section with the left mouse button to edit that section's color.
- Drag a separator with the left mouse button to change how far that section extends.
- Hold Shift and left-click a section to add a new separator there.
- Hold Shift and left-click a separator to delete it.
A Reset configuration tooltip is also present on this screen, which restores the configuration to its default state.
Simulation and Planes Settings
The Simulation & planes area holds settings that shape how wakes behave and appear:
- First person splash plane — controls whether your own splash plane is visible while you are in first person. Its tooltip asks whether the player's splash plane should be seen in first person.
- Pixel resolution — adjusts the pixel resolution of the wakes. This is useful for making wakes fit better visually with certain resource packs.
- Shader light passthrough — fine-tunes how wakes look when shaders are in use. Higher values produce brighter wakes.
- Boat pick block — lets you grab a boat quickly by middle-clicking water, working like pick block.
- Wave propagation factor — sets how much influence one pixel has on the pixels next to it within the wakes.
- Wave decay — determines how much of a pixel's value remains after each tick, on a logarithmic scale.
- Initial wave strength — the strength a source begins with when producing a wake.
- Debug colors — renders wakes using debug colors.
- Show debug info in F3 — displays debug information in the F3 screen.
- Flood fill distance — sets the distance used for flood fill.
- Flood fill tick delay — sets how many ticks pass before flood fill occurs.
Hotkeys
Some actions in Wakes are bound to hotkeys rather than buttons. To use any of these, assign the corresponding hotkey in the controls menu, since no default key is specified here.
Practical Notes
Because each spawning rule is separate, the fastest way to get the look you want is to work through the list one entry at a time and choose the effect for each object type. If you later want a different appearance, return to Mod configurations and use Configure wake colors to adjust the color intervals, or use the Reset configuration option to start over. The simulation settings in Simulation & planes are best adjusted after the spawning rules, since they affect how the chosen effects behave rather than which ones appear.
