XP Storage: Books That Hold Experience
XP Storage lets you bank experience in items. This guide covers its recipe list and a system that exists on only one build.
Two bespoke categories, both 1.21.1 only
- XP Book Upgrade — 3 recipes on 1.21.1, none on 1.20.1
- XP Book Deprecate — 3 recipes on 1.21.1, none on 1.20.1
Six recipes exist on the newer build and nowhere on the older one. Since ordinary crafting runs the other way — 4 recipes on 1.21.1 against 5 on 1.20.1 — the newer build is a net five recipes larger.
The pairing of "upgrade" and "deprecate" categories at three recipes each is the interesting part: whatever tiers of book exist, there is a defined route both up and back down.
Five items, no blocks
5 pages, 5 items, zero blocks. Nothing is placed; the books are carried and used directly.
Both builds are Fabric
1.6 for 1.21.1 and 1.5.7 for 1.20.1, both on Fabric. That is a real constraint — a Forge or NeoForge pack cannot use this mod on either Minecraft line.
No structures, no dependency
The mod generates no worldgen and needs no partner mod. It is self-contained and can be added to a world in progress safely.
Why experience storage matters
Experience is the one resource vanilla does not let you stockpile — it is lost on death and cannot be moved. A mod that banks it changes how much risk enchanting-heavy play carries, which is why a five-item mod can have an outsized effect.
Where to start
Craft the base book from the crafting list, then check the upgrade recipes if you are on 1.21.1. On 1.20.1 there is no upgrade path at all, so the book you make is the book you keep.
What to expect
A small utility mod: five items, roughly ten recipes, no blocks and no progression beyond the book tiers. Its value is in what it protects rather than in what it adds.
The upgrade pair is the thing to notice
Two categories of three recipes each — one to upgrade a book, one to deprecate it — is an unusually symmetric design for a five-item mod. Most mods provide a way up and no way back; this one budgets equally for both directions.
Both exist only on 1.21.1, so on the older build a book has no tiers at all.
Why banking experience changes play
Experience is the one vanilla resource that cannot be stored, moved or insured. Everything else goes in a chest; levels do not. A mod that fixes that alters how much a death actually costs, which is why five items can matter more than their count suggests.
Scale
5 pages, 5 items, 0 blocks, 0 structures. Ten recipes on 1.21.1, five on 1.20.1, both on Fabric.
