YUNG's Better Dungeons: Redesigned and New Dungeons

guide

YUNG's Better Dungeons overhauls Minecraft's plain dungeons and adds several new ones to explore. This guide covers what it adds.

Redesigned dungeons

The mod completely redesigns the vanilla dungeon — the small mossy spawner room — into a far more elaborate, rewarding structure, so even the familiar dungeon becomes worth seeking out.

New dungeons

Three new overworld dungeons join them: the Catacombs, the Fortresses of the Undead, and Spider Caves, each with its own theme, mobs and loot. If you enable it in the config, small Nether dungeons also generate throughout the Nether as an opt-in extra.

Exploring

The mod is built to be compatible with other worldgen mods, including the rest of the YUNG's series, so it slots into a modded world cleanly. Explore widely to find the new dungeons, come equipped for their guardians, and enjoy the reworked loot. YUNG's Better Dungeons is about making underground exploration a highlight rather than an afterthought.

A pure structure mod

YUNG's Better Dungeons registers five structures and nothing else — no items, no blocks and no recipes at all. Everything you find inside its builds is vanilla loot or loot from other mods in your pack.

That has a practical consequence worth stating: the mod's value scales with the rest of your modlist. In a light pack the dungeons are architecture; in a heavy one they are a delivery system for other mods' content.

What it replaces

Rather than adding parallel structures, this mod overhauls the dungeon builds a world already generates, so you find them the same way you always have. There is no new locator item and no search pattern to learn.

Version note

The builds are 5.1.4 on 1.21.1 (NeoForge) and 4.0.4 on 1.20.1 (Forge). Both are structure-only sets, so nothing about loot or recipes differs between them.

Preparing to explore

Because the mod adds no gear of its own, bring what you would take into a vanilla dungeon — the difficulty comes from layout and scale rather than from unfamiliar mobs.

The spacing decides what you find first

The five dungeons do not generate at the same rate, and the difference is large enough to plan around:

The three themed dungeons sit at roughly four times the spacing of the small one, so they are genuine finds rather than background scenery. All five are placed as underground structures, which is why none of them show on the surface.
