Exploring the Forlorn Hollows Biome, Forlorn Bridge, and Forlorn Canyon in Alex's Caves

guide

The Forlorn Hollows biome is one of the cave biomes added by Alex's Caves, and it is the only place where the Forlorn Bridge and Forlorn Canyon generate. Both structures belong to the same biome, so finding the biome is the first step toward finding either one. Alex's Caves is a Forge mod for Minecraft 1.20.1 that adds six cave biomes to the Overworld, and these biomes are exceedingly rare compared to normal biomes. The Forlorn Hollows is one of those six, alongside the Magnetic Caves, Primordial Caves, Toxic Caves, Abyssal Chasm, and Candy Cavity.

Finding the Biome

To locate any of the mod's cave biomes, you need to discover an Underground Cabin somewhere in the Overworld. Inside, loot barrels contain cave tablets and a Cave Compendium, the guide book for Alex's Caves. The Cave Compendium is meant to provide the knowledge needed to find and explore any biome added by the mod. Because the Forlorn Hollows is rare, expect the search to take time.

The Forlorn Bridge

The Forlorn Bridge is a structure that generates in the Forlorn Hollows. Its placement follows a fixed pattern: the game makes one attempt per 8x8 chunk region, and each attempt must be at least 7 chunks away from another Forlorn Bridge. That spacing rule means bridges do not crowd together; when you find one, the next one is some distance away.

The Forlorn Canyon

The Forlorn Canyon also generates in the Forlorn Hollows, but its placement rules differ from the bridge. It gets one attempt per 6x6 chunk region, with a minimum spacing of 4 chunks between canyons. Because the canyon's region is smaller and its minimum distance is shorter, its attempts are packed more tightly than the bridge's. Both structures share the same biome, so a single trip through the Forlorn Hollows can put you near either one.

Crafting Vesper Stew

While exploring the Forlorn Hollows, you may gather materials for Vesper Stew. The recipe is shapeless, meaning the ingredients can be placed in any arrangement on the crafting grid. Combine a Vesper Wing, a Thornwood Branch, a Brown Mushroom, and a Bowl to craft the stew.

The result is one Vesper Stew.

Exploring Comfortably

Alex's Caves puts a great deal of effort into the look and feel of each biome. Every biome may have its own ambient particles, fog, brightness, light color, and more. Because of this, experiencing the mod without shaders is recommended, since many shaders can alter or worsen the unique appearance of several biomes. The mod also has built-in compatibility with Just Enough Items and Alex's Mobs. Note that Alex's Caves requires Citadel.

Practical Notes

  • The Forlorn Hollows is the only biome listed for both the Forlorn Bridge and the Forlorn Canyon.
  • Bridge spacing is wider than canyon spacing: 7 chunks minimum versus 4.
  • Bridge attempts use 8x8 chunk regions; canyon attempts use 6x6 chunk regions.
  • Vesper Stew is crafted shapelessly from a Vesper Wing, a Thornwood Branch, a Brown Mushroom, and a Bowl.

If you have additional questions about the mod, the Discord server is the place to ask, and bugs can be reported on Github.
