A New Player's Introduction to Alex's Caves
This guide provides essential information for new players beginning their Alex's Caves adventure. Alex's Caves introduces six distinct cave biomes to the Overworld, each with unique blocks, items, mobs, and mechanics. These biomes are rare, making their discovery a significant event.
Finding Cave Biomes
To locate any of the new cave biomes, you must first find an Underground Cabin. These cabins are generated in specific regions of the Overworld. Within these cabins, you will discover loot barrels containing
cave tablets and a
Cave Compendium. The
Cave Compendium serves as a guide for finding and exploring the biomes added by the mod.
Underground Cabin Generation:
- Underground Cabins generate in areas marked as #alexscaves:has_underground_cabins.
- The game attempts to place one cabin per 10x10 chunk region.
- Each cabin will be at least 2 chunks away from any other cabin.
Cave Biome Overview
Each cave biome in Alex's Caves has its own distinct characteristics, including ambient particles, fog, brightness, and light color. It is recommended to experience this mod without shaders, as some shaders may negatively impact the unique visual appearance of these biomes.

Version note
Alex's Caves targets Minecraft 1.20.1. There is no 1.21.1 build in this line, so a pack on the newer version cannot include it — worth knowing before planning a world around it.
Fourteen structures, and how common each is
The cave biomes are not empty. Fourteen structures generate across them, and their spacing values tell you which you will trip over and which you will hunt for:
- Ocean Trench — spacing 2, by far the densest thing the mod places
- Dino Bowl — spacing 4
- Abyssal Ruins — spacing 5
- Acid Pit, Cake Cave, Ferrocave, Forlorn Canyon — spacing 6
- Forlorn Bridge, Soda Bottle — spacing 8
- Donut Arch — spacing 11
- Gingerbread Town — spacing 13
- Licowitch Tower — spacing 21, the rarest
Most generate in the underground-structures step, so they are found by caving rather than by scanning the surface.
What the caves give you
Each biome has its own ore and its own food chain, and both run through ordinary vanilla machinery: blasting handles the ores, while a campfire, smoker or furnace all cook the local catch. That means you need no mod-specific machine to start using a cave biome — walk in, mine, and cook what you kill.
