Ars Nouveau: Getting Started with Spell Crafting

guide

Ars Nouveau is a magic mod built around crafting your own spells, and it starts with a single book. Craft the Worn Notebook from a book and one Lapis Lazuli — the notebook is your in-game documentation and the entry point to everything the mod offers.

Source: the mod's power

Almost every advanced device runs on Source, a magical energy stored in Source Jars. Source is gathered by Sourcelinks and moved by Source Relays, then spent by machines like the Imbuement Chamber and by automation. Building a small Source network early unlocks the rest of the mod.

Spells and spell books

Spells are assembled from glyphs at a Scribes Table and cast from a spell book. Higher-tier spells need a better book: a novice spell book only reaches Tier 1 spells, while the Apprentice and Archmage books unlock higher tiers. Your first casting tool is usually the Enchanter's Wand.

Where to go next

  • Learn the spell system — forms and effects — in the spell crafting guide.
  • Build a Source network with Sourcelinks and relays for automation.
  • Craft rings, amulets and other baubles to boost your mana and casting.

The Worn Notebook documents each glyph, item and ritual as you unlock it, so keep it handy while you explore.

Glyphs are the largest system

Ars Nouveau's recipe list is dominated by two categories: Glyph at 85 recipes on 1.21.1 (81 on 1.20.1) and Enchanting Apparatus at 82 (75). Between them they carry the spellcasting side of the mod, and both grew slightly on the newer build.

Crush Glyph adds another 26 recipes on both versions — the route for breaking glyphs back down.

The supporting systems are small

The imbuement chamber's 13 recipes are the early game: that is where source gems come from, and it is the first machine worth building.

Scale

353 pages across 181 blocks and 172 items, plus 240 crafting recipes and 65 stonecutting, with three structures in the world.

Version note

Every category is equal or larger on 1.21.1 (5.13.1) than on 1.20.1 (4.12.7) — crafting 240 against 215, glyphs 85 against 81. Nothing was removed, so a 1.20.1 guide is safe to follow on the newer build.
