Create stress calculator

List what turns your network and what it drives. The calculator adds up stress capacity and load in stress units (SU) the way a Stressometer would, sizes a steam engine from its boiler, and tells you how many more sources you need if the network is overstressed. The link in your address bar keeps the setup.

How stress works

Every kinetic source has a capacity per RPM, and every machine an impact per RPM. A source supplies its capacity times the speed it turns at; a machine draws its impact times the speed it runs at. A Water Wheel (32 × 8 RPM) gives 256 SU, a Large Water Wheel (128 × 4 RPM) 512 SU, and a Mechanical Press (8 per RPM) running at 64 RPM draws 512 SU. Speeding a machine up with gears costs proportionally more stress; shafts, gearboxes and belts cost nothing.

A windmill turns 1 RPM for every 8 sail blocks, up to 16 RPM at 128 sails, at 512 SU per RPM. A steam engine supplies 16,384 SU when its boiler can feed it fully. The boiler's level is the lowest of three things: its heat (1 per heated Blaze Burner, 2 per superheated one), its size (one level per 4 tank blocks) and its water (one level per 10 mB/t), up to 18. Each level feeds one engine; more engines than levels share the power. Fully fed engines spin at 64 RPM and starved ones slower, while one boiler gives 16,384 SU per level as long as it has an engine for each level. A boiler warmed only by a passive heat source (a campfire or lava) gives one eighth of an engine's output in total, whatever its size.
