Epic Knights Guide: Basic Materials, Steel Smelting, and Early Crafting
Getting Started with Core Materials
This guide covers the basic materials, steel smelting, and early crafting recipes in the Epic Knights mod. Before you can forge advanced armor, you need to understand how to produce
Steel Ingots,
Steel Nuggets, and
Woolen Fabric, as these form the foundation for most early recipes.
Smelting Steel from Iron
The primary way to obtain
Steel Ingots is through blasting. Place an
Iron Ingot into a blast furnace, and it will convert into a
Steel Ingot. This is the most direct route to your first steel, so prioritize setting up a blast furnace early.
Blasting also works for other metal items. For example, an
Iron Stiletto can be blasted down into an
Iron Nugget, and a
Golden Stiletto yields a
Gold Nugget. Similarly, a
Steel Stiletto can be blasted into a
Steel Nugget, which is useful for recycling or for getting nuggets without crafting them directly.
Crafting Steel Ingots and Nuggets
Once you have either form of steel, you can convert between the two using standard shaped crafting recipes.
- To make a
Steel Ingot, arrange nine
Steel Nuggets in a full 3x3 crafting grid. - To make
Steel Nuggets, place a single
Steel Ingot in any crafting slot; it will break down into nine nuggets.
This conversion is essential for managing your resources, especially when a recipe requires a specific form of steel.
Making Woolen Fabric
Woolen Fabric is a simple early material used in various armor and equipment recipes. You have two options for crafting it:
- Place six
String in a crafting grid to produce one
Woolen Fabric. - Alternatively, place three
White Wool blocks to get the same result.
The string recipe is often easier early on, as string is readily available from spiders or from breaking cobwebs. The wool recipe is useful if you have sheep nearby and prefer not to hunt spiders.
Early Armor: Reinforced Chainmail
With steel and leather in hand, you can begin crafting reinforced chainmail armor. These recipes require a combination of steel, leather, and leather strips.
Reinforced Chainmail Boots
To craft
Reinforced Chainmail Boots, you need:
- 2
Steel Ingots - 2
Leather Strips - 2
Leather
Arrange these in the standard boot-shaped pattern (two items on the left column, two on the right, and two in the middle row for the foot area). The exact layout follows the usual armor crafting shape.
Reinforced Chainmail Leggings
For
Reinforced Chainmail Leggings, the recipe is different and uses chainmail material:
This recipe requires you to have already crafted or obtained
Steel Chainmail, which is a separate component. Place the five chainmail pieces in the leg slots (the bottom two rows of the crafting grid) and the two steel ingots in the top corners to form the leggings.
Planning Your Early Progression
A practical order of operations is:
1. Smelt iron ore into
Iron Ingots. 2. Blast those ingots into
Steel Ingots. 3. Convert some ingots into
Steel Nuggets if a recipe calls for them. 4. Gather
String or
White Wool to make
Woolen Fabric for padding or other components. 5. Collect
Leather and craft
Leather Strips from it (by placing leather in a crafting grid). 6. Use your steel to craft
Steel Chainmail first, then move on to the leggings and boots.
Remember that
Steel Chainmail itself is a prerequisite for the leggings, so check your available materials before starting that recipe. The boots are simpler and only require ingots, leather, and strips, making them a good first target once you have a steady steel supply.
