Crafting and Upgrading Elliptical, Heater, Kite, and Round Shields
Overview
This guide covers the crafting and upgrading process for the shield types introduced by Epic Knights: Shields, Armor, and Weapons. Each shield begins as a wooden base and can be reinforced with different materials to improve its quality. The upgrade system is consistent across all shield shapes, so learning one pattern applies to the others.
The Base Shield
Every upgrade path starts with a Wooden Elliptical Shield. You cannot skip this step. The wooden version is the foundation for all metal and gem-reinforced variants. To create a higher-tier shield, you must place the wooden shield in the crafting grid along with the required materials.
Upgrade Materials
The upgrade recipes require exactly four units of a specific material plus the wooden shield. The materials and their corresponding shield results are listed below:
Iron Ingot x4 + Wooden Elliptical Shield → Iron Elliptical Shield
Steel Ingot x4 + Wooden Elliptical Shield → Steel Elliptical Shield- Diamond (tag: `#c:gems/diamond`) x4 + Wooden Elliptical Shield → Diamond Elliptical Shield
Bronze Ingot (tag: `#c:ingots/bronze`) x4 + Wooden Elliptical Shield → Bronze Elliptical Shield
Silver Ingot (tag: `#c:ingots/silver`) x4 + Wooden Elliptical Shield → Silver Elliptical Shield
Copper Ingot x4 + Wooden Elliptical Shield → Copper Elliptical Shield
Crafting Pattern
All recipes are shaped, meaning the placement of items in the crafting grid matters. The wooden shield must be positioned in the center of the grid, with the four material items arranged around it in a cross or square pattern. The exact shape follows the standard upgrade layout: one material in each of the four cardinal positions (top, bottom, left, right) surrounding the central shield.
Shield Shape Consistency
The recipes listed above all produce the elliptical shield variant. The same upgrade logic applies to the other shield shapes—heater, kite, and round—but each shape requires its own corresponding wooden base. For example, a heater shield upgrade would start with a wooden heater shield, and a kite shield upgrade starts with a wooden kite shield. The material costs and the four-item requirement remain identical; only the base shield type changes.
Practical Notes
- Gather the base wooden shield first before attempting any upgrade. Without it, the recipe will not work.
- The material tags (`#c:gems/diamond`, `#c:ingots/bronze`, `#c:ingots/silver`) mean that any item registered under those tags will work. For instance, if your modpack includes multiple types of silver ingots, any of them can be used.
- Copper and iron use their standard ingot forms directly, with no tag requirement.
- Diamond uses the gem tag, so any diamond-equivalent gem from other mods that shares the tag may also be accepted.

To craft any upgraded shield, follow this simple process: obtain the wooden shield of your chosen shape, gather four units of the desired material, and arrange them in the shaped crafting pattern with the shield centered. The result is a reinforced shield that retains the original shape but gains the properties of the new material. Whether you prefer the classic elliptical, the balanced heater, the elongated kite, or the compact round, the upgrade path is the same across all four types.
