Immersive Engineering Basics: Tools, Resources, and Initial Processing

Essential Tools

Several tools are crucial for any engineer. The Engineer's Hammer is vital for configuring and forming multiblock machines, and it can also crush ores. To remove wires connected to a block or strung between poles, use Engineer's Wire Cutters by right-clicking. The Engineer's Screwdriver allows for precise adjustments on certain machinery. A Multimeter is used to measure connections; aim it at an energy storage or right-click it to read its current capacity. To calculate the average energy loss between two connectors, sneak-right-click them with the Multimeter. This tool can also read redstone levels from blocks like redstone connectors and redstone dust.

New Ores

Immersive Engineering introduces several new ores to find and process:

  • Bauxite Ore is found between certain layers and requires a stone pickaxe or better. Smelting it yields aluminium ingots, which are key for high-voltage systems.
  • Lead Ore is located between specific layers and needs an iron pickaxe or better. Smelting produces lead ingots, used for early accumulators, bullets, and industrial dyes.
  • Silver Ore is found between certain layers and requires an iron pickaxe or better. Smelting it gives silver ingots, useful for mirrors or alloying with gold to create electrum, a more effective conductor.
  • Nickel Ore can be found between certain layers, with higher concentrations deeper down. It requires an iron pickaxe or better. Smelting yields nickel ingots, used in accumulators or alloyed with copper to create constantan for Thermoelectric Generators.
  • Uranium Ore is found between specific layers and requires an iron pickaxe or better. Smelting produces uranium ingots, which have few current uses but can serve as heat sources for Thermoelectric Generators.

Treated Wood

Treated wood is made from wooden planks impregnated with Creosote Oil. This durable, weatherproof material is used extensively in industrial construction. Treated wood can also craft Wallmounts, which offer an aesthetic way to attach connectors without using posts. Wallmounts can be placed facing upwards or downwards and do not automatically connect to nearby blocks.

The Coke Oven

The Coke Oven is a foundational multiblock machine. It processes fuels in a low-oxygen environment, converting them into more carbon-rich versions like Coal Coke or Charcoal. A byproduct of this process is Creosote Oil, which preserves wood. The coking process is slow but handles batches of up to 16 pieces of coal or 8 wooden logs simultaneously. Building multiple Coke Ovens and keeping them stocked is recommended for efficiency.

The Coke Oven can be automated using hoppers or conveyor belts for item input and output. Creosote Oil must be removed using a fluid pump, as the oven does not output it automatically. To construct a Coke Oven, arrange 27 Coke Oven blocks in a 3x3x3 cube, then right-click one of the center blocks on any side with an Engineer's Hammer. One known recipe converts an unspecified item into Charcoal.
