How gem armor works
Gem armor has no set bonus. Every piece adds levels to its own gem's effect, the chestplate and leggings three each, the helmet and boots two each, so a single piece already gives the effect at level 2 or 3 and a full set reaches level 10. Pieces of different gems each feed their own effect, which is how a mixed set runs two or three effects at lower levels. The effects scale with the level, except the aquamarine freeze, which is the same at any level.
Gem tools trigger their effect on melee hits with the tool in your main hand. Apart from their effects, all eight gems make identical gear: every piece has exactly the stats of its netherite counterpart (sapphire tools hit 1 harder), though unlike netherite it burns in lava. The effects are the whole difference.
