How the Powah reactor works
A reactor burns uraninite and makes the most power when it runs cold. Its temperature climbs toward a target set by what you feed it: 700 from the fuel, 180 more with carbon (coal, charcoal or any furnace fuel) and 120 more with redstone, up to 1,000. The hotter it runs, the less of its maximum it produces and the faster it eats uraninite.
Carbon pays for its heat: without it the output drops by a sixth. Redstone is a gamble on cooling: it raises the output by 40%, but it also adds heat and makes the heat hurt more, so an uncooled reactor with carbon makes more power without redstone than with it. With solid coolant, redstone is a clear win. Water on its own does not cool the reactor. It only lets solid coolant work: ice divides the target temperature by 6, blue ice by 18 and dry ice by 33, which is why a dry-ice reactor runs close to its tier's maximum on very little fuel.
