Applying Tier Upgrades to Placed Chests and Barrels

To use tier upgrades in Sophisticated Storage, shift right-click the upgrade item directly onto a placed chest or barrel in the world without breaking the block or spilling its inventory.

In-World Upgrade Execution

Upgrading storage containers directly in the world saves countless hours of inventory reorganization:

  • Hold the appropriate upgrade item—such as a Basic to Iron Tier Upgrade or Iron to Gold Tier Upgrade—in your main hand.
  • Crouch (hold Shift) and right-click the target chest or barrel.
  • The container transforms immediately into the higher tier with an audible sound effect.
  • The block's visual model updates to reflect its new metal trim and expanded capacity.

All items inside the container remain completely safe and undisturbed during the transformation.

Preserving Installed Upgrades and Filters

Applying an in-world upgrade preserves all existing functionality:

  • Installed utility upgrades—such as Compacting Upgrade, Feeding Upgrade, or Advanced Hopper Upgrade—remain lodged in their respective slots.
  • Custom item filters, whitelists, and blacklists retain their exact configuration settings.
  • Linked connections to Storage Controllers remain active without needing to re-pair storage tools.
  • Upgrading to Diamond or Netherite unlocks additional empty upgrade slots, allowing immediate installation of further automation modules.

Upgrading Double Chests

Upgrading double chests requires matching double-tier upgrade items:

  • Use a Double Chest Tier Upgrade containing copper, iron, gold, or diamond materials.
  • Right-clicking either half of a double chest upgrades both halves simultaneously into a cohesive double metal chest.
  • To upgrade a Diamond Double Chest to Netherite, combine it shapelessly with a Netherite Ingot or apply a Diamond to Netherite upgrade directly in the world.

Troubleshooting In-World Upgrades

If a tier upgrade does not apply upon right-clicking, check these common conditions:

  • Verify that you are crouching (holding Shift) while right-clicking with the upgrade item in your primary hand.
  • Confirm that the tier progression matches, as applying an Iron-to-Gold upgrade onto a basic wooden container will not function without the intermediate Iron step.
  • Ensure that the target block is an authentic Sophisticated Storage container rather than an unmodified vanilla wooden chest.
  • Clear any obstructions above chests that might impede opening animations.
