How storage capacity works

Chests, barrels and shulker boxes share the same tiers: 27 slots in wood, then 45, 54, 81, 108 and 132 slots in netherite, with one to five upgrade slots. Stack upgrades multiply each other, so two tier 5 upgrades make every slot hold 1,024 stacks, but these three take at most two of them.

Limited barrels trade slots for depth: a Limited Barrel I has a single slot that already holds 32 stacks in wood and 160 in netherite, and the II, III and IV versions split that into two, three or four smaller slots. They have no cap on stack upgrades beyond their upgrade slots, so a netherite Limited Barrel I filled with tier 5 upgrades reaches the game's limit of about 2.1 billion items in its one slot.
