Packing Tape: Moving a Full Chest Without Emptying It
Packing Tape is how you pick up a Sophisticated Storage chest or barrel with everything still inside it, and it is the item most players do not discover until the first time the game refuses to let them break a full barrel. Tape it, break it, place it somewhere else, and the contents, the upgrades and every filter setting come along.
Crafting the tape
- Packing Tape is shapeless: one slime ball plus one paper. It carries eight uses.
Super Packing Tape is four Packing Tape combined, giving thirty-two uses in a single item with a visible enchanted glint.
The maths is deliberately flat - four tapes in, thirty-two uses out - so the super version is purely about inventory space and not about efficiency. Craft it when you are relocating a whole storage room and do not want four separate tape items cluttering your hotbar.
Both items show their remaining uses in the tooltip, so you always know how many more containers you can move.
Why the game blocks you from breaking a full storage
Break an untaped storage block and its contents spill out as loose item entities. A netherite-tier chest with stack upgrades can hold an enormous number of items, and dropping all of them at once would spawn far more entities than a server wants to deal with in one tick.
Sophisticated Storage guards against this. If breaking a container would exceed the loose-drop limit, the break is refused outright and you are told how many item entities it would have produced. The message offers two ways forward: use packing tape, or break the block while sneaking to skip the check and accept the spill.
The limit itself is a server setting, so the exact number varies between packs. Treat sneaking as the emergency option and tape as the normal one.
Where tape earns its keep
Tape matters most on the containers that are expensive to rebuild:
- Upgraded tiers. Copper, iron, gold, diamond and netherite containers cost real materials to tier up, and the tier travels with the taped block.
- Configured upgrades. Filters, magnet ranges, hopper directions and pump settings are all fiddly to re-enter. Taping preserves them.
- Stack upgrades. These multiply the stacks a slot can hold - two times at the first tier, three at the plus tier, then four, eight, sixteen and thirty-two at the higher tiers. A container with a high stack upgrade is exactly the one that would otherwise blow past the loose-drop limit.
- Controller networks. A multiblock of linked storages can be packed one block at a time and rebuilt around a new
Storage Controller without unloading anything.
When you do not need tape at all
Three cases sidestep the whole system:
- Shulker boxes. Combining a Copper Chest, Iron Chest, Gold Chest or Diamond Chest with a
Shulker Shell produces a metal shulker box that keeps its capacity, and a shulker box already retains its contents when broken. If the container's job is to travel with you, build it as a shulker box in the first place. - A pack that has turned tape off. Some packs set the configuration so every storage drops packed automatically. When that is on, the tape's tooltip says so directly, and the item becomes redundant.
- Contraption travel. A storage attached to a Create contraption is not being broken at all. It keeps its inventory and its upgrades while the contraption moves, and it can be opened and used mid-journey.
One block you cannot simply take
A container holding an Infinity Upgrade can only be broken by an admin - the upgrade makes every item inside it infinite, so ordinary players are locked out of picking it up. The 
Survival Infinity Upgrade is the variant that lets any player break it. No amount of packing tape changes that rule.
A practical moving day
Craft one Super Packing Tape for every thirty-two containers you plan to move. Work along the wall taping and breaking as you go, keeping the taped blocks in a shulker box for the trip. Place them in the new room, relink them to the controller with the 
Storage Tool, and nothing needs sorting afterwards, because nothing ever left the box.
