How drawer capacity works

A drawer's size is counted in stacks per slot: a full 1x1 drawer holds 32 stacks, a 1x2 drawer 16 in each slot and a 2x2 drawer 8 in each. Half drawers hold half as much. The item's own stack size decides the item count, so a slot of ender pearls holds a quarter as many items as a slot of cobblestone.

Each drawer has seven upgrade slots. Storage upgrades do not multiply each other: their multipliers are added up. Two tier I upgrades make ×4, the same as one tier II. That is why the top tiers matter so much. One tier VII upgrade (×2,048) outweighs any number of the lower ones. The Storage Downgrade shrinks every slot to a single stack, useful for sorting displays.
