How the conversion works
The alternator turns rotation into Forge Energy and the electric motor turns it back. Both are sized to the same scale: 64 stress units per RPM, so 16,384 SU at 256 RPM. At full speed an alternator makes 360 FE/t and a motor needs 480 FE/t to spin. The alternator's output is proportional to speed, so the same stress always buys the same energy: halving the RPM halves both the stress and the FE.
Going from energy to rotation and back loses a quarter of it, so a motor driving an alternator is only a way to move power, never to make it. A motor also draws at least 8 FE/t whenever it is turning, however slowly.
